Biogeochemical Niche of Magnetotactic Cocci Capable of Sequestering Large Polyphosphate Inclusions in the Anoxic Layer of the Lake Pavin Water Column

Cecile C. Bidaud et al.

Summary: Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) play an important role in biogeochemical cycles by biomineralizing or sequestering elements in aquatic environments. Lake Pavin, as a unique aqueous system, harbors diverse MTB populations with the capability to sequester various elements in different microenvironments. This study investigates the abundance and vertical stratification of MTB populations in relation to environmental parameters, and reveals a specific group of MTB capable of sequestering large amounts of polyphosphates below the oxic-anoxic transition zone. The results suggest a tight link between the sulfur and phosphorus metabolisms of these bacteria and provide insights into the role of MTB in the phosphorus cycle in stratified environmental conditions.

Identification and characterization of magnetotactic Gammaproteobacteria from a salt evaporation pool, Bohai Bay, China

Peiyu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, two magnetotactic Gammaproteobacteria strains were identified from a salt evaporation pool in Bohai Bay, eastern China. One strain, FZSR-2, was found to be the same species as previously discovered strains SHHR-1 and SS-5, while the other strain, FZSR-1, represents a novel species. The research highlights a relationship between magnetite morphology within the strains and the salinity of their environment.

Rapid screening of Zr-containing particles from Chang'e-5 lunar soil samples for isotope geochronology: Technical roadmap for future study

Jin-Hua Li et al.

Summary: New samples returned by China's Chang'e-5 mission provide an opportunity for studying lunar geologic longevity, space weathering, and regolith evolution. A non-destructive rapid screening method for isotope geochronology of zirconium-containing particles was developed, and a workflow for studying the lunar samples at different scales was proposed. This method and workflow have the potential to be applied in non-destructively screening other types of particles and for different scientific purposes.

Intracellular silicification by early-branching magnetotactic bacteria

Jinhua Li et al.

Summary: Biosilicification, the process of forming biological structures composed of silica, is widely distributed among eukaryotes and plays a significant role in global biogeochemical cycles. Recent discoveries of silica transporter genes and silicon accumulation in bacteria suggest that prokaryotes, particularly in ancient times, may also have played a previously unrecognized role in the Si cycle. This study reports the identification of a magnetotactic bacterium that forms intracellular, amorphous silica globules, revealing intracellularly controlled silicification within prokaryotes and its potential influence on the biogeochemical Si cycle during early Earth history.

Intracellular amorphous Ca-carbonate and magnetite biomineralization by a magnetotactic bacterium affiliated to the Alphaproteobacteria

Caroline L. Monteil et al.

Summary: Bacteria can synthesize a variety of non-biological precipitates with different chemical compositions and structures within cells, including magnetic particles and calcium carbonate granules. Research has shown that the amorphous calcium carbonate granules formed by these bacteria are contained within membrane-delimited vesicles. Analysis of a new genus of Alphaproteobacteria revealed atypical structure of the magnetosome gene cluster, and the bacteria consume energy to maintain an environment suitable for calcium carbonate granule formation.
