Long-Term Association of Air Pollution and Hospital Admissions Among Medicare Participants Using a Doubly Robust Additive Model

Mahdieh Danesh Yazdi et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to fine PM2.5, NO2, and tropospheric ozone is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases among the elderly population in the United States. At various pollutant concentrations, all studied outcomes consistently showed an increased risk association.

Emulating causal dose-response relations between air pollutants and mortality in the Medicare population

Yaguang Wei et al.

Summary: This study explored the causal dose-response relations between chronic exposures to PM2.5, O3, NO2 and all-cause mortality using national Medicare cohort data from 2000 to 2016. The study found that higher levels of PM2.5, O3, and NO2 were causally associated with greater risk of mortality, with PM2.5 posing the greatest risk. A decile binning approach was proposed to make the inverse probability weights robust against outliers and provide more accurate estimates for continuous exposures. The study's findings have significant implications for reviewing national air quality standards and estimating the potential impact of reducing air pollution on early deaths.

Quantifying the short-term effects of air pollution on health in the presence of exposure measurement error: a simulation study of multi-pollutant model results

Dimitris Evangelopoulos et al.

Summary: This study found that measurement error in multi-exposure models can lead to biased effect estimates for different pollutants and impact the interpretation of their independent effects. Using error parameter information in future studies may improve the accuracy of concentration-response functions.
