Characteristics and removal mechanism of the precursors of N-chloro-2,2-dichloroacetamide in a drinking water treatment process at Taihu Lake

Mengqing Ge et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of N-chloro-2,2-dichloroacetamide (N-Cl-DCAM) in drinking water treatment processes, and highlighted the inefficiency of conventional methods in removing its precursors. The combination of ozonation and biological activated carbon (O-3-BAC) showed improved removal efficiency for N-Cl-DCAM precursors.

Size and resin fractionations of dissolved organic matter and characteristics of disinfection by-product precursors in a pilot-scale constructed wetland

Jiachang Pi et al.

Summary: The study found that after treatment in the constructed wetland, the low molecular weight fraction of DOM and DBPFP generally decreased, while the high molecular weight fraction of DOM increased. Despite the hydrophobic fraction of DOM being the most abundant, the hydrophilic fraction had a higher SDBPFP.

Role of precursors in the formation of trihalomethanes during chlorination of drinking water and wastewater effluents from a metropolitan region in western India

Neha Sharma et al.

Summary: This study compared the nature of DOM in samples collected from drinking water and wastewater treatment plants in western India, finding that water samples consist mostly of humic-like components while wastewater was dominated by protein-like components. The study also showed that the hydrophobic acid and neutral fractions of DOM were primarily responsible for THM formation.

Variations of disinfection byproduct precursors through conventional drinking water treatment processes and a real-time monitoring method

Xiaoxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, raw water, settled water, and filtered water from a drinking water treatment plant were fractionated into 24 natural organic matter fractions with varying properties. The disinfection byproducts obtained during chlorination of these NOM fractions were explored, with a focus on hydrophobic DBP precursors. The results indicated that certain molecular weight fractions and hydrophobic compounds in raw water dominated the production of DBP precursors.

Characterization of Dissolved Organic Matter and Its Derived Disinfection Byproduct Formation along the Yangtze River

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: The Yangtze River basin covers a significant portion of China's land area and serves as an important water source for a large population. Variation in dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties along the Yangtze River significantly impacts water treatment and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation after chlorination. The study reveals different DOM characteristics in the Yangtze River waters, highlighting their influence on DBP formation.

Haloacetic Acids Formation Potential of Tropical Peat Water DOM Fractions and Its Correlation with Spectral Parameters

Muammar Qadafi et al.

Summary: The spectral parameters of DOM fractions in tropical peat water are correlated with the formation of carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), with the hydrophobic acid (HPOA) fraction dominating the DOM composition. UV-Vis absorbance parameters show a strong positive correlation with HAA formation potential (HAA5FP), while A(210)/A(254) and S200-205 parameters are negatively correlated with HAA5FP.
