Salinity-dependent expression of calcium-sensing receptors in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) tissues

S. Jury et al.

Summary: Multiple reports suggest that calcium-sensing receptors are involved in calcium homeostasis, osmoregulation, and salinity sensing in fish. The isolated CaSR cDNAs from Atlantic salmon kidney share many features with other reported CaSRs and show different expression patterns in salmon tissues under freshwater or seawater acclimation. The data support a role for CaSR proteins in osmoregulatory and sensory functions in Atlantic salmon, an anadromous species.

Evaluating tank acclimation and trial length for dynamic shuttle box temperature preference assays in aquatic animals

Adam Alexander Harman et al.

Summary: The study found that the length of acclimation time and trial length did not have a significant effect on the thermal preference of juvenile lake whitefish. Additionally, there were no significant differences in temperature preference between different experimental designs.

Shuttle-box systems for studying preferred environmental ranges by aquatic animals

Emil A. F. Christensen et al.

Summary: The article summarizes the use of shuttle-boxes as a research tool with aquatic animals over the past 50 years. It is found that with increasing research interest in the effects of environmental change, shuttle-box technology has been more widely applied in the past decade. Through this technology, research topics regarding preferred ranges of temperature, CO2, salinity, and O2 in multiple species can be studied.
