Empirical prediction of the in-plane/out-of-plane interaction effects in clay brick unreinforced masonry infill walls

Mariano Di Domenico et al.

Summary: This study experimentally assesses the effects of in-plane damage on the out-of-plane response of square unreinforced masonry infills with low slenderness ratio in reinforced concrete frames. The results enrich the experimental database, evaluate the effectiveness of current provisions for predicting the IP/OOP interaction effects, and propose empirical formulations for predicting the IP/OOP interaction effects based on infill geometric properties and IP displacement demand.

The use of satellite data to support the structural health monitoring in areas affected by slow-moving landslides: a potential application to reinforced concrete buildings

Andrea Miano et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential utility of satellite data derived from remote sensing techniques for structural health monitoring of reinforced concrete buildings affected by landslides. This methodology can be quickly applied to a large number of reinforced concrete buildings for landslide risk reduction in civil protection programs.

Methodology for Assessing the Performance of RC Structures with Breakaway Infill Walls under Tsunami Inundation

Marta Del Zoppo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a methodology for assessing the performance of reinforced concrete buildings taking into account the progressive failure of exterior breakaway infill walls hit by tsunami flows. The effects of this failure on the overall performance of RC buildings were highlighted on case-study buildings in the Mediterranean area built before the 1980s. The methodology can provide a realistic performance assessment of frame structures with breakaway claddings, changing the distributions of loads and leading to different structural capacity and damage evolution compared to watertight buildings.

Influence of exterior infill walls on the performance of RC frames under tsunami loads: Case study of school buildings in Sri Lanka

Marta Del Zoppo et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the structural performance of RC frame buildings under tsunami-induced loads, with a focus on the influence of exterior masonry infill walls. Through two case studies, it is found that the in-plane behavior of infill walls can enhance the structure's flexural capacity and lateral stiffness, while neglecting the assumption of non-breakaway infill walls often leads to premature structural failure mechanisms.

Metamodel-based state-dependent fragility modeling for Markovian sequential seismic damage assessment

Ao Du et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of seismic damage accumulation is crucial for seismic risk assessment. Current state-dependent fragility models have limitations in parameterization and damage classification, hindering their applicability for structural portfolios. A novel metamodel-based fragility modeling approach is proposed in this study, which integrates advanced ground motion selection and machine learning techniques to improve parameterization and damage classification capabilities, while also being seamlessly integrated into the Markovian sequential seismic damage assessment (SSDA) framework.
