A method of step-by-step packing and its application in generating 3D microstructures of polycrystalline and composite materials

V. Romanova et al.

Summary: Micromechanical simulations provide valuable information on microscale stress and strain distributions, with construction of 3D microstructure models being a challenging task. A step-by-step packing method is presented for constructing 3D microstructure models, with different growth laws and seed distributions allowing for a wide variety of geometrical features in the models.

Effect of crystal orientation on inner surface roughness of micro metal tubes in hollow sinking

Takuma Kishimoto et al.

Summary: The crystal orientation plays a crucial role in suppressing the development of inner surface roughness during hollow sinking, and crystal grains with {102} crystal planes vertical to the normal direction to the inner surface were found to be effective in this process. Additionally, decreasing wall thickness resulted in the rotation of crystal grains so that the {102} crystal plane was parallel to the normal direction, which contributed to the suppression of inner surface roughness development.

Evolution of Mesoscopic Deformation-Induced Surface Roughness and Local Strains in Tensile Polycrystalline Aluminum

V. A. Romanova et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the deformation-induced mesoscopic surface roughening process in commercially pure aluminum under uniaxial tension. It shows that multiscale undulations are formed on the surface from the beginning of plastic deformation and evolve during stretching, with undulations formed due to the collective displacement of 10-15 grains making the greatest contribution to roughening. A correlation between the roughness degree and local plastic strains is established through quantitative assessment and comparison of mesoscopic undulation behavior using a dimensionless parameter of the degree of roughness.

On the definition of RVE size in simulations of mesoscale deformation-induced surface roughening in polycrystals

V Romanova et al.

Summary: This study examines different polycrystalline models with varying sizes and numbers of grains to determine the representative volume element capable of reproducing mesoscale deformation-related phenomena. The results show that the range of plastic deformation where the model is applicable is directly related to its size and number of grains. The model's ability to accommodate plastic strain increases with more grains arranged along the axis of tension.

Strain Induced Surface Change in Sheet Metal Forming: Numerical Prediction, Influence on Friction and Tool Wear

Yutian Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the surface roughening effect caused by free deformation in sheet metal forming, and predicted its influence on friction behavior and painting quality through numerical simulation and experimental validation. The results demonstrated that the surface roughness induced by pre-straining has a negative impact on the lubricating effect of the sheet metal, degrading the friction behavior.
