The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Antibiotics: Methods, Interpretation, Clinical Relevance

Beata Kowalska-Krochmal et al.

Summary: The inefficiency of medical therapies for curing patients with bacterial infections calls for active search for new therapeutic strategies and careful selection of antibiotics based on various parameters including microbiological considerations. Proper assessment of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies and ensuring the effectiveness of infection therapy. This paper discusses methods for MIC estimation, factors influencing MIC results, and possibilities of utilizing MIC in clinical practice with consideration of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters.

Development of a EUCAST disk diffusion method for the susceptibility testing of rapidly growing anaerobic bacteria using Fastidious Anaerobe Agar (FAA): a development study using Bacteroides species

Herjan Bavelaar et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the suitability of FAA as a medium for disk diffusion for rapidly growing anaerobic bacteria, and results showed that FAA is suitable. Factors such as incubation temperature and manufacturer had an impact on zone diameters and quality of growth, with incubation at 35 degrees Celsius resulting in slightly larger zones and good agreement among manufacturers for FAA performance.

Performance of Fully Automated Antimicrobial Disk Diffusion Susceptibility Testing Using Copan WASP Colibri Coupled to the Radian In-Line Carousel and Expert System

Abdessalam Cherkaoui et al.

Summary: The study assessed the agreement at the categorical level between the Vitek 2 system and the Colibri coupled to the Radian under real laboratory conditions, with high overall categorical agreements. However, Vitek 2 had significant errors in P. aeruginosa testing. The Colibri coupled to the Radian provides an automated solution for antimicrobial disk diffusion susceptibility testing with accuracy equal to or better than the Vitek 2 system.
