Experimental assessment of dedicated and integrated mechanical subcooling systems vs parallel compression in transcritical CO2 refrigeration plants

Laura Nebot-Andres et al.

Summary: Mechanical subcooling systems have great potential to improve CO2 refrigeration systems. The COP increments of these systems have been theoretically determined, but not yet experimentally contrasted. In this study, the dedicated and integrated mechanical subcooling systems are experimentally compared to the parallel compression system. The results show significant improvements in COP for both subcooling systems compared to the base system.

Performance assessment of a rotary active magnetic regenerator prototype using gadolinium

M. Masche et al.

Summary: An experimental rotary magnetocaloric prototype utilizing active magnetic regeneration was presented as an alternative to traditional cooling systems. The prototype achieved efficient cooling using gadolinium spheres and water mixed with ethylene glycol as the refrigerant and heat transfer fluid, respectively. Operating near room temperature, the system demonstrated cooling powers exceeding 800 W at 1.4 Hz, comparable to existing magnetocaloric devices.

Summary: This study presents a dynamic lumped parameter model to predict the cabinet temperature, energy consumption and efficiency parameters of a small capacity magnetic refrigerator. The model's primary inputs are geometric features, power source frequencies and speeds, and magnetic material compositions and properties. Special emphasis is placed on the lumped AMR model, which accurately predicts performance based on experimental validation.

Experimental determination of the optimum working conditions of a commercial transcritical CO2 refrigeration plant with a R-152a dedicated mechanical subcooling.

Laura Nebot-Andres et al.

Summary: This study experimentally tested the working performance of a transcritical CO2 plant with an R-152a DMS system and found the optimal operating parameters for maximizing COP under different working conditions. The results show that different working conditions, such as ambient temperature and cold source temperature, can significantly impact the cooling capacity and COP of the system. Two correlations were proposed to determine the optimal pressure and subcooling degree for CO2 plants using DMS based on gas-cooler outlet temperature and evaporation level.
