Process optimization for dilute acid and enzymatic hydrolysis of waste wheat bread and its effect on aflatoxin fate and ethanol production

Samane Torabi et al.

Summary: The hydrolysis of waste wheat bread using amylolytic enzymes and dilute hydrochloric acid was studied, yielding the highest glucose yield of 69.8% and 93% under specific conditions, respectively. Both dilute acid and enzymatic hydrolysis showed efficient removal of aflatoxin B1, with potential ethanol production of 86.9% and 83.0% of theoretical yields.

Life cycle assessment of ethanol produced in a biorefinery from liquid hot water pretreated switchgrass

Valeria Larnaudie et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessments were conducted on fuel bioethanol produced in Uruguay from liquid hot water pretreated switchgrass for two scenarios: ethanol and electricity production, and a biorefinery producing various chemicals. Results showed that the biorefinery scenario had lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels and met GHG reduction requirements. Factors such as switchgrass composition, enzyme dosage, fermentation efficiency, and solids content significantly impacted environmental performance, with enzyme use being the most significant.

Bioethanol from autoclaved municipal solid waste: Assessment of environmental and financial viability under policy contexts

Fanran Meng et al.

Summary: Producing ethanol through fermentation can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with financial viability depending on the ethanol yield and productivity of microorganisms. The majority of revenue comes from gate fees received by diverting waste to autoclave and ethanol production, rather than ethanol sales revenue.
