Fuelling power plants by natural gas: An analysis of energy efficiency, economical aspects and environmental footprint based on detailed process simulation of the whole carbon capture and storage system

Elena Barbera et al.

Summary: In the context of low-carbon transformation in the power sector, natural gas-fired power generation is the only fossil resource technology that can provide flexibility for the power system. However, carbon capture and storage equipment is needed to mitigate the carbon dioxide emissions from these plants. This study uses process simulation to evaluate two different carbon capture processes and considers the Energy Return on Energy Invested, Levelized Cost of Energy, and Life Cycle Assessments. Results show that gas-fired power plants with carbon capture and storage have comparable Energy Return on Energy Invested values to photovoltaics and wind power, but their Levelized Cost of Energy is much higher. The sustainability of gas-fired power stations equipped with carbon capture and storage needs careful consideration.
