Energy-saving owing to using PCM into buildings: Considering of hot and cold climate region

Bahman Soleiman Dehkordi et al.

Summary: The energy consumption in the Middle East has increased by 24.2% from 2010 to 2020. Despite the global warming phenomenon affecting the region, the share of renewable energy has remained relatively unchanged. The study found that the effectiveness of phase change materials (PCM) varies between hot and cold regions, and the proper selection of PCM can lead to significant energy savings and reduced building energy demand.

A review on buildings energy information: Trends, end-uses, fuels and drivers

M. Gonzalez-Torres et al.

Summary: Buildings contribute significantly to climate change, but there is a lack of reliable and consistent data for the development and evaluation of mitigation policies. Residential buildings have the highest energy consumption, with HVAC systems being the main source. Electrification has the potential to mitigate climate change if renewable power is promoted, but global cooperation is needed to break the link between economic growth, urbanization, and energy consumption in developing nations.

PCM-containing bi-layered alkali-activated materials: A novel and sustainable route to regulate the temperature and humidity fluctuations inside buildings

Margarida Goncalves et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a bi-layered alkali-activated composite with highly porous top-layer and dense bottom-layer containing phase change material (PCM) is reported for the first time, showing potential to regulate temperature swings and humidity levels inside buildings. Results indicate that PCM content affects mechanical and thermal performance, while the thin porous layer influences moisture buffer ability.

Experimental investigation on the hygrothermal behavior of a new multilayer building envelope integrating PCM with bio-based material

Dongxia Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hygrothermal behavior of a multilayer building envelope integrating hemp lime concrete (HLC) and PCM. Results show that PCM significantly affects the hygrothermal behavior of HLC, with a linear relationship between PCM position and heat store/release capacity. It is recommended to place PCM close to the outdoor side for lower heating/cooling load.

Experimental and modeling investigation of water adsorption of hydrophilic carboxylate-based MOF for indoor moisture control

Kan Zu et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), specifically MIL-160(Al), were studied as desiccants for water vapor adsorption, showing hydrophilicity with a turning point at 8%P/P0. A 3-D heat and mass transfer model was used to investigate moisture transport factors like MOF layer thickness and porosity. Insights for using MIL-160(Al) as a desiccant system were provided through simulation and validation of sorption performance.
