Experimental and numerical analysis of the spray characteristics of biodiesel-ethanol fuel blends

Limin Geng et al.

Summary: The effects of adding ethanol to biodiesel on spray characteristics were investigated through experiments and numerical simulation. The results showed that the concentration and velocity of atomized droplets decrease with distance from the nozzle exit, and the addition of ethanol can effectively improve the spray quality of biodiesel. Biodiesel has higher STP and SMD compared to diesel, and the addition of 30% ethanol results in reduced STP and SMD in biodiesel-ethanol blends.

An experimental investigation of the performance, emission and combustion stability of compression ignition engine powered by diesel and ammonia solution (NH4OH)

Michal Pyrc et al.

Summary: The study found that co-combustion of water ammonia solution with diesel fuel increased ignition delay period and combustion duration, as well as raised heat release rate. Combustion involving ammonia caused deterioration in engine stability, but did not exceed permissible stability levels. Additionally, the addition of water ammonia solution reduced nitrogen oxide emissions, increased carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions, with no significant changes in carbon dioxide emissions.

Effects of diesel pre-injection on the combustion and emission characteristics of a common-rail diesel engine fueled with diesel-methanol dual-fuel

Yangyang Li et al.

Summary: The study on diesel-methanol dual-fuel combustion using single and double injection strategies showed that double injection led to lower heat release rate and maximum cylinder temperature, along with higher cycle-to-cycle variation of indicated mean effective pressure, decreased HC emissions, and increased CO, NOx, and PM emissions. NOx emissions and particulate matter size increased with co-combustion ratio when diesel pre-injection was applied.

Thermochemical Recuperation to Enable Efficient Ammonia-Diesel Dual-Fuel Combustion in a Compression Ignition Engine

Seamus P. Kane et al.

Summary: A thermochemical recuperation reactor was developed to improve dual-fuel diesel-ammonia compression ignition engines by decomposing ammonia and oxidizing unburned ammonia emissions, allowing high diesel fuel replacement ratios. The experimental results showed an increase in engine brake thermal efficiency in high exhaust temperature modes but a decrease in other modes. Hydrocarbon and soot emissions increased with replacement ratios, while engine-out oxides of nitrogen emissions decreased. Higher levels of unburned ammonia were measured in the exhaust with increased replacement ratios, leading to increased post-TCR reactor ammonia and NOx emissions. However, the engine-out NH3-to-NOx ratios were suitable for passive selective catalytic reduction, demonstrating the potential for using the appropriate catalyst in the TCR reactor.

Determination and utilization of optimal diesel/n-butanol/biogas derivation for small utility dual fuel diesel engine

Sunil Kumar Mahla et al.

Summary: The combination of biodiesel, higher alcohols, and gaseous fuel as alternative fuels for diesel engines has shown positive impacts on performance and emissions characteristics, with the addition of n-butanol in diesel fuel showing favorable effects on biogas operated dual-fuel engines. An optimization process using multi-criteria decision analysis and response surface method techniques found that the optimal values of engine load, n-butanol concentration, and biogas flow rate were 78.89%, 20%, and 1.37 kg/h respectively, resulting in improved efficiency and reduced emissions.

Experimental Research on the Macroscopic and Microscopic Spray Characteristics of Diesel-PODE3-4 Blends

Yulin Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that blended fuel with PODE3-4 has better spray characteristics than pure diesel at low temperatures, with an increase in injection pressure leading to increased vapor phase penetration distance and cone angle, and decreased Sauter mean diameter. As ambient temperature increased, the vapor phase projection area and cone angle of the blended fuel increased while SMD decreased.
