Effect of Ignition Energy and Hydrogen Addition on Laminar Flame Speed, Ignition Delay Time, and Flame Rising Time of Lean Methane/Air Mixtures

Minh Tien Nguyen et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of ignition energy and hydrogen addition on the combustion characteristics of lean methane-air mixtures. The results showed that increasing hydrogen fraction led to an increase in the laminar burning velocity and a decrease in both ignition delay time and flame rising time. The relationship between hydrogen fraction and burning velocity was nonlinear, with a drastic change occurring when the hydrogen fraction exceeded 20%. Additionally, the transition in ignition delay time was observed when the ignition energy exceeded a critical value.

Effects of water vapor on auto-ignition characteristics and laminar flame speed of methane/air mixture under engine-relevant conditions

Zhipeng Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper numerically simulated the effects of water vapor on the auto-ignition characteristics and laminar flame speed of the methane/air mixture. The results showed that the ignition delay time of the methane/air increased with increasing water vapor ratio, and the laminar flame speed and adiabatic combustion temperature decreased as well.

Explosion characteristics assessment of premixed biogas/air mixture in a 20-L spherical vessel

Siti Zubaidah Sulaiman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of biogas explosions and their severity, finding that the severity of the explosion increases with higher biogas concentration but decreases with higher CO(2) concentration. The experimental data can help engineers design prevention and mitigation measures for biogas explosions, which are classified as catastrophic events.

Evaluating the effect of multiple flammable gases on the flammability limit of CH4: Experimental study and theoretical calculation

Zhenmin Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that adding mixed gas can decrease both the upper and lower flammability limits of methane, with a larger decrease in the lower limit. Under nitrogen dilution, the limiting oxygen concentration decreases with an increase in mixed gas concentration, leading to an expanded explosion triangle and increased danger of explosion. Sensitivity analysis shows that reactions involving active free radicals have higher sensitivity and can impact the flammability limit range of methane.

Deflagration Characteristics of N2-Diluted CH4-N2O Mixtures in the Course of the Incipient Stage of Flame Propagation

Maria Mitu et al.

Summary: Experimental measurements were conducted in a spherical combustion bomb to investigate flame propagation in N-2-diluted CH4-N2O mixtures with stoichiometric equivalence ratio. The study focused on the cubic law of pressure rise during the incipient stage of flame propagation and calculated burnt mass fractions and flame radii at various moments. The results also included cubic law coefficients and laminar burning velocities at considered time intervals.
