Anaerobic Digestion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste in Plug-Flow Reactors: Focus on Bacterial Community Metabolic Pathways

Elena Rossi et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of a pilot-scale plug-flow reactor in recovering chemicals and biogas during the dry thermophilic anaerobic digestion of organic waste. The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the outputs were studied, and a particular focus was given to characterizing the bacteria responsible for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The results showed that reducing the HRT to 16 days led to an increase in VFA concentration and biogas production.

Plug-flow reactor for volatile fatty acid production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste: Influence of organic loading rate

Elena Rossi et al.

Summary: This study found that increasing the organic loading rate can enhance the production of total VFAs during dry thermophilic anaerobic digestion of organic solid waste, with propionic acid dominating. As the OLR increased, the concentrations of iso-valeric and butyric acids also increased.

High-solids thermophilic anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge: effect of ammonia concentration

M. Takashima et al.

Summary: In this lab-scale study, high-solids thermophilic anaerobic digestion was conducted with sewage sludge containing 7-8% and 9-10% total solids. It was found that the system successfully operated with 7-8% sewage sludge, but encountered issues with 9-10% sewage sludge due to ammonia inhibition. Proper control of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) can enable the system to accommodate up to 10% influent sewage sludge.

Biogas production, waste stabilization efficiency, and hygienization potential of a mesophilic anaerobic plug flow reactor processing swine manure and corn stover

Daniel E. Arias et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anaerobic co-digestion of swine manure and corn stover, showing that increasing organic loading rate within a certain range can lead to stable process with high biogas production and reduced negative environmental impacts. The highest total biogas yield was achieved at an organic loading rate of 0.25 kg m(-3) d(-1). As organic loading rate and total solids content increased, changes in microbial activity were observed due to variations in volatile solid reduction and volatile fatty acids production.

Anaerobic digestion of mechanically sorted organic waste: The influence of storage time on the energetic potential

Alessandra Cesaro et al.

Summary: Separate collection is the preferred method for managing municipal solid waste, but significant amounts of unsorted waste are still produced in Europe. Mechanical biological treatments are commonly used for waste valorization, with aerobic biostabilization being a popular method, though long storage time may limit the feasibility of anaerobic digestion for mechanically selected organic waste.

Characterization of the separately collected organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from rural and urban districts for a one-year period in Germany

Gregor Sailer et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the physicochemical characteristics of rural and urban organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) samples from southwestern Germany, focusing on basic characteristics and element contents. Differences were observed in dry matter and organic dry matter contents between rural and urban OFMSW, with element concentrations useful for improved classification of OFMSW as a biorefinery resource.

Adding activated carbon to the system with added zero-valent iron further improves anaerobic digestion performance by alleviating ammonia inhibition and promoting DIET

Shuang Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of activated carbon can improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion system with zero-valent iron added, shortening the time to reach maximum daily methane yield and reducing the concentration of free ammonia to alleviate its inhibitory effect. The combined addition enriched specific methanogenic microorganisms and enhanced electron exchange to accelerate methane production.
