An overview of different homogenizers, their working mechanisms and impact on processing of fruits and vegetables

Gagan Jyot Kaur et al.

Summary: Fruits and vegetables are important foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that help boost immunity against chronic diseases. Homogenizers, including mechanical homogenizers, pressure homogenizers and ultrasonic homogenizers, are commonly used in the processing of fruits and vegetables. Among them, high-pressure homogenizers have been widely used and reported due to their ability to improve shelf-life and physicochemical properties of the product.

Ultrathin and super-tough membrane for anti-dendrite separator in aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents the use of ultrathin and high-toughness membranes made of eco-friendly biomass nanofibers as separators in rechargeable zinc-ion batteries. The biomass membrane prevents zinc dendrite penetration, manipulates crystallographic orientation during zinc deposition, and improves the corrosion resistance of zinc, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance.

Swelling of individual cellulose nanofibrils in water, role of crystallinity: an AFM study

Vegar Ottesen et al.

Summary: Research showed that the swellability of cellulose nanofibrils depends on their degree of crystallinity rather than the diameter. Samples with higher crystallinity had a smaller diameter increase upon introduction of de-ionized water, while samples with lower crystallinity had a larger diameter increase.

A review of zinc-based battery from alkaline to acid

N. Wang et al.

Summary: The demand for high-performance advanced batteries has led to the emergence of zinc-based rechargeable batteries (ZBRBs) as the most promising secondary batteries. These batteries utilize zinc as a stable anode in aqueous energy storage systems, providing shuttle cations in the electrolyte for future industrialization. The development of electrolyte systems for ZBRBs, ranging from traditional alkaline to acidic environments, and the influence of electrolyte components on performance are key areas of focus for research.

A rechargeable zinc-air battery based on zinc peroxide chemistry

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: The study presents a zinc-O-2/zinc peroxide chemistry that operates through a 2e(-)/O-2 process in nonalkaline aqueous electrolytes, allowing highly reversible redox reactions in zinc-air batteries. This innovative ZnO2 chemistry, enabled by water-poor and zinc ion (Zn2+)-rich inner Helmholtz layer, shows superior reversibility and stability compared to alkaline zinc-air batteries.

A review of culture media for bacterial cellulose production: complex, chemically defined and minimal media modulations

Gabriela Sperotto et al.

Summary: Culture media for bacterial cellulose production are classified into undefined and defined media. Modification of carbon and nitrogen sources in complex media can improve BC yield. Chemically and minimal defined media may serve as potential alternatives due to their exact nutrient composition. The choice of culture media will impact the costs, yield, and properties of BC.

Zhanxin Wu et al.

Summary: The research on Zn-Al-La layered double hydroxides prepared by the hydrothermal method and used as a new anodic material for Zn-Ni secondary batteries showed that the material exhibited good crystallinity and uniform dispersion, with excellent cycle reversibility and corrosion resistance when applied to Zn-Ni batteries. The electrode also demonstrated outstanding cycle stability after 150 cycles, with a cycle retention rate reaching 91.63%.

Nanofibrillation of Bacterial Cellulose Using High-Pressure Homogenization and Its Films Characteristics

Heru Suryanto et al.

Summary: By adjusting the repetition cycles of the high-pressure homogenizer (HPH) process, the microstructure of bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNs) film was controlled, resulting in the highest tensile strength and lowest surface roughness at 10 cycles. The HPH process effectively regulated the porosity level of BCNs film, while the HPH cycles had a slight influence on the crystalline index and crystallite size of BCNs.
