Power Outages, Firm Productivity, and Generator Ownership in East Africa

Nina Kupzig

Summary: This paper examines the impact of power outages on firm productivity in East Africa, showing that outages have large negative effects on productivity. However, self-generation during power outages can mitigate these effects, although it can also generally reduce productivity due to idle capital.

State-of-the-Art of Mini Grids for Rural Electrification in West Africa

Fernando Antonanzas-Torres et al.

Summary: The current electrification status in West African countries requires improvement, and off-grid mini grids have shown great potential in addressing energy challenges, attracting international funding. Despite rapid growth in the market, research and data on the social impact of mini grids in this region remains scarce.

A critical review of literature on the nexus between central grid and off-grid solutions for expanding access to electricity in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia

S. C. Bhattacharyya et al.

Summary: This paper critically examines the literature on the grid-offgrid debate and finds that model results are seriously influenced by various factors including assumptions, data limitations, technology choices, and model flexibility. Existing models have weaknesses such as exclusion of grid system generation costs, lack of village level information, inherent bias towards scale and technology type, and absence of social equity considerations.

A review of hybrid renewable energy systems in mini-grids for off-grid electrification in developing countries

Emilia Ines Come Zebra et al.

Summary: Rural communities in developing countries lack access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy sources, but through hybrid renewable energy systems with government support and community organization, more convenient and cost-effective electricity supply can be achieved. Diesel is the most expensive technology, and government incentives play a crucial role in lowering capital costs to promote renewable energy supply.
