Impact of land management on available water capacity and water storage of peatlands

Haojie Liu et al.

Summary: Peatlands around the world, drained for agriculture and forestry practices, have led to carbon and water loss, as well as soil degradation. Research shows that the soil's available water capacity increases with bulk density but decreases significantly with further increases in bulk density. The average available water capacity of agricultural peatlands in Germany is estimated to be 37.8%, with a water storage of approximately 19.3 km³.

Particulate PhozzyLogic Index for policy makers-an index for a more accurate and transparent identification of critical source areas

Gerold Hepp et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach, the Particulate PhozzyLogic Index (PPLI), which combines a complex watershed model with fuzzy logic to provide easy-to-use information on field level for the identification of critical phosphorus source areas (CSAs). The study also enhances the watershed model with a new algorithm for the allocation of phosphorus loads to their sources of origin. The sensitivity analysis shows that different scenarios may lead to partially disagreed CSAs, but all scenarios support the 80:20 rule.

The climate benefits of topsoil removal and Sphagnum introduction in raised bog restoration

Vytas Huth et al.

Summary: The study found that rewetting alone can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 75% compared to intensive grassland, but substantially increase CH4 emissions. After topsoil removal (TSR) and rewetting, on-site CO2 emissions were close to zero, or even net negative with Sphagnum introduction, while CH4 emissions remained very low.

Paludiculture as a sustainable land use alternative for tropical peatlands: A review

Zu Dienle Tan et al.

Summary: This review examines the importance of carbon storage in peatlands for climate change mitigation and explores the concept of paludiculture as a sustainable alternative for peatland use. The application of paludiculture in tropical regions is less understood compared to temperate regions, and there are ambiguities surrounding its definitions, key themes, and future directions. Further research is needed to evaluate the sustainability of paludiculture practices in the context of carbon sequestration in peat soils.

Restoring wetlands on intensive agricultural lands modifies nitrogen cycling microbial communities and reduces N2O production potential

Kuno Kasak et al.

Summary: The concentration of nitrous oxide (N2O) is rapidly increasing in the atmosphere, mainly originating from microbial nitrogen cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Research shows that the abundances of nirS and nirK genes are highest in intensively managed agricultural fields, indicating high N2O production potential, while nitrogen transforming genes are more abundant in agricultural sites compared to wetland sites. Wetlands may act as a sink of N2O, suggesting that wetland restoration could be a promising natural climate solution.

The dynamics of phosphorus fractions and the factors driving phosphorus cycle in Zoige Plateau peatland soil

Ling Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated phosphorus dynamics in Zoige Plateau peatland, revealing that season, peatland type, and soil depth strongly affect phosphorus dynamics; labile phosphorus had lower content, while non-labile phosphorus fractions were dominant; biotic factors had a greater impact on phosphorus fractions than abiotic factors.
