Sustainable management of agricultural water and land resources under changing climate and socio-economic conditions: A multi-dimensional optimization approach

Mo Li et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a model framework for the multi-dimensional optimization of agricultural water and land resources management in a changing environment. The model framework comprehensively allocates resources, balances conflicting goals, and proposes alternative allocation schemes to cope with environmental changes, leading to optimal adaptation allocation plans. The feasibility and practicality of the model framework are verified through a real-world case study, showing its potential for sustainable management of agricultural water resources and land resources.

Single-item substitutions can substantially reduce the carbon and water scarcity footprints of US diets

Donald Rose et al.

Summary: This study estimated the potential impact of a single dietary substitution on the carbon and water scarcity footprints of self-selected diets in the United States, finding that simple substitutions can significantly reduce these footprints without sacrificing dietary quality.

Measurement and driving factors of grey water footprint efficiency in Yangtze River Basin

Tianbo Fu et al.

Summary: Water shortages and poor water quality have become an urgent problem constraining the sustainable development of China. The study analyzed the grey water footprint in the Yangtze River Basin and established a model to decompose the grey water footprint efficiency, providing insights for policy-making.

Carbon drawdown potential of utility-scale solar in the United States: Evidence from the state of Georgia

Marilyn A. Brown et al.

Summary: Governments worldwide recognize the need to reduce carbon footprints and are adopting different methods tailored to their local conditions. A case study of Georgia in the US analyzed the pros and cons of utility-scale and rooftop solar systems, with utility-scale solar being found capable of reducing Georgia's carbon footprint by an additional 10% by 2030. However, the majority of Georgia's solar electricity currently comes from utility-scale solar, and additional incentives would be needed to promote the growth of rooftop solar, taking into consideration the potential adverse effects on low-income customers. Therefore, a comprehensive approach involving both utility-scale and rooftop solar systems is necessary to achieve science-based climate goals.

350 cities of China exhibited varying degrees of carbon decoupling and green innovation synergy

Xinzhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study used the Tapio decoupling model to analyze the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth in 350 cities in China from 2008 to 2019. The results showed that there were 8 different decoupling states, and carbon decoupling could promote green transformation among cities. Additionally, green transformation was found to be an important factor in carbon decoupling.

Analyzing the driving mechanisms of grain virtual water flow based on the case of China's main grains

Xue Han et al.

Summary: The study classified the driving types of virtual water flow in China's main grains production into four categories, and found that social factors directly affect VWF. Additionally, water use has a direct impact on VWF in representative provinces, with regions rich in water resources importing virtual water and regions poor in water resources exporting virtual water.

Optimal irrigation water allocation in Hetao Irrigation District considering decision makers' preference under uncertainties

Xiaoxing Zhang et al.

Summary: A fuzzy multi-objective m(lambda)-measure dependent-chance programming model was proposed in this study to optimize limited irrigation water allocation among three crops and five subareas, considering the physical process of soil water balance and sensitivity of crop yield to water deficit. The results provide decision makers with various water-allocation schemes under drought conditions to ensure food security and maximize economic benefits.

Decoupling water environment pressures from economic growth in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Yuying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the decoupling performance and driving factors of economic output and water environment pressure in provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2004 to 2018. The overall trend showed positive decoupling, but the upper reaches of the Yangtze River demonstrated unstable decoupling and tended to deteriorate.

The impact of water scarcity on Chinese inter-provincial virtual water trade

Jie Deng et al.

Summary: Chinese water resources are limited and unevenly distributed, leading to a prosperous inter-provincial virtual water trade. Research indicates that water scarcity affects virtual water trade, exacerbating regional water shortages in northern and eastern coastal China.

Analysis of water?carbon?ecological footprints and resource?environment pressure in the Triangle of Central China

Yizhong Chen et al.

Summary: The current evaluation of resource environment pressure mostly relies on the multi-index comprehensive evaluation method, which is subjective and may lack comparability. This study proposes a footprint family indicator system to quantitatively assess spatial-temporal variations in REP, and applies it to the Triangle of Central China region.

Decoupling economic development from municipal solid waste generation in China's cities: Assessment and prediction based on Tapio method and EKC models

Kaifeng Wang et al.

Summary: The decoupling state between municipal solid waste generation and economic development in Chinese cities generally improved first and then deteriorated from 2002 to 2017. Cities with higher economic development levels experienced more serious deterioration in decoupling states. The empirical results of the Environmental Kuznets Curve effectively support and explain the decoupling analysis results.
