Energy facies: A global view of pyroclastic currents from vent to deposit

Domenico M. Doronzo et al.

Summary: Pyroclastic currents are described as gravity currents with different density characteristics, including inertial and forced components. A global conceptual model now takes into account both source dynamics and topographic interaction. Energy facies indicators such as topological aspect ratio, competence ratio, and emplacement temperature are used to characterize pyroclastic currents.

No evidence for tephra in Greenland from the historic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE: implications for geochronology and paleoclimatology

Gill Plunkett et al.

Summary: The distribution of volcanic ash in polar ice sheets is important for dating ice-core records and investigating the environmental impacts of eruptions. A study on ash particles in a Greenland ice core reveals that a volcanic sulfuric acid layer previously attributed to the 79 CE eruption of Vesuvius is more likely to be originated from an unidentified eruption in the Aleutian arc. The findings challenge the previous assignation of the volcanic event to 79 CE and highlight the need for revised ice-core chronologies to ensure robust age linkages to historical and paleoclimate proxy records.

Validation of a two-layer depth-averaged model by comparison with an experimental dilute stratified pyroclastic density current

Hiroyuki A. Shimizu et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-layer depth-averaged model was used to numerically simulate pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) with stratification of particle concentrations. Results showed that the thickness of the suspended load and bed-load in the simulations depend on the settling speed at the bottom of the bed load. By setting the settling speed to a specific value, the simulated thicknesses of bed load and deposit matched well with experimental data.

The impact of pyroclastic density currents duration on humans: the case of the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius

Pierfrancesco Dellino et al.

Summary: Pyroclastic density currents, resulting from the collapse of eruption columns or lava domes, can cause devastation with high speed movements away from the volcano. Currents' impact on human survival is influenced by flow duration, in addition to pressure and temperature. Research on historical eruptions suggests that in distal areas where temperature and strength are lower, survival is possible if the flow duration is short.

Destructiveness of pyroclastic surges controlled by turbulent fluctuations

Ermanno Brosch et al.

Summary: Pyroclastic surges are destructive hazards from volcanoes, with dynamic pressure energy mainly carried by large-scale coherent turbulent structures and gravity waves. Real-world flows exhibit destructiveness through the development of approximately 1-20 successive high-pressure pulses per minute.

The Independent Volcanic Eruption Source Parameter Archive (IVESPA, version 1.0): A new observational database to support explosive eruptive column model validation and development

Thomas J. Aubry et al.

Summary: Eruptive column models are important for studying volcanic gas and ash transport, reconstructing past explosive eruptions, and simulating future hazards. The Independent Volcanic Eruption Source Parameter Archive (IVESPA) is a community effort endorsed by IAVCEI, providing a standardized dataset of independently estimated eruption source parameters from 134 explosive eruptive events. Data are rigorously vetted by experts and uncertainties are quantified systematically, making IVESPA a valuable tool for evaluating and developing eruptive column models.

Examples of Multi-Sensor Determination of Eruptive Source Parameters of Explosive Events at Mount Etna

Valentin Freret-Lorgeril et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed data from multiple sensors during two different intensity volcanic eruptions at Mount Etna, Italy, and found that different sensors provide complementary observations that should be critically analyzed and combined for comprehensive estimates of eruptive source parameters (ESPs). The measurements of plume height during strong paroxysmal activity agreed, while discrepancies were found for weak paroxysms due to rapid plume and cloud dilution. Different sensors also provided information on different phases of the paroxysms, allowing for the conversion of total erupted mass (TEM) to mass eruption rate (MER) and vice versa. Additionally, satellite retrievals for grain-size combined with radar data showed promising agreement with total grain-size distribution (TGSD) derived from satellite data and whole deposit grain-size distribution (WDGSD).

Simulating the Transport and Dispersal of Volcanic Ash Clouds With Initial Conditions Created by a 3D Plume Model

Zhixuan Cao et al.

Summary: The study introduces the use of a three-dimensional volcanic plume model to represent the ash cloud source, improving predictive skill. Application of the model to the Pinatubo eruption reveals the significant impact of initial particle distribution on long-range ash cloud transport. Comparison with satellite data shows that the 3D model-based distribution of ash particles produces improved VATD simulations.
