Fractionation of germanium and silicon during scavenging from seawater by marine Fe (oxy)hydroxides: Evidence from hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts and nodules

David M. Ernst et al.

Summary: Germanium and silicon show coherent behavior in many geochemical systems, but they can fractionate from each other in aqueous systems and in the critical zone. This study reveals that there is a strong fractionation of the germanium-silicon couple in seawater during the formation of hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts and nodules. The high germanium-silicon ratios in these crusts and nodules suggest fractionation of germanium and silicon during scavenging from seawater and not from detrital material in the precipitate.

Banded iron formation from Antarctica: The 2.5 Ga old Mt. Ruker BIF and the antiquity of lanthanide tetrad effect and super-chondritic Y/Ho ratio in seawater

David M. Ernst et al.

Summary: This study presents the first detailed geochemical data for Banded Iron-Formation (BIF) from Antarctica, revealing high sample purity and chemical composition similar to other early Precambrian BIF. The Rare Earths and Yttrium patterns show characteristics of modern seawater, indicating the historical distribution of REY in seawater.

Highly Siderophile Elements and Coupled Fe-Os Isotope Signatures in the Temagami Iron Formation, Canada: Possible Signatures of Neoarchean Seawater Chemistry and Earth's Oxygenation History

Toni Schulz et al.

Summary: The study of highly siderophile elements and Fe-Os isotopes in the Temagami BIF reveals little variation in element abundance and isotope ratios, possibly related to mantle-like Os-187 inventory from deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Positive δFe-56 values in the BIF are likely due to partial oxidation of hydrothermally sourced Fe(II) and a lack of microbially mediated dissimilatory iron reduction.
