Intense Organic Afterglow Enabled by Molecular Engineering in Dopant-Matrix Systems

Xun Li et al.

Summary: In this study, intense dopant-matrix afterglow systems have been reported with high afterglow efficiency and afterglow lifetime. Through the use of hydrogen bonding and deuteration techniques, the rate of reverse intersystem crossing of the dopant triplets is reduced, resulting in unexpectedly high afterglow brightness and duration even at room temperature. Triplet-triplet annihilation has also been observed at high doping concentrations to further enhance the afterglow efficiency.

Activating room-temperature phosphorescence of 1,8-naphthalimide by doping into aromatic dicarboxylic acids

Xiangming Wang et al.

Summary: The room-temperature phosphorescence of 1,8-naphthalimide can be activated by doping it into aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The doping system generates a bright yellow afterglow, and a phosphorescent lifetime of 403 ms and a quantum yield of 4.2% can be achieved with 0.02 mol% doping content of 1,8-naphthalimide and isophthalic acid. Both energy transfer from the host to the guest and the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen-bonding network contribute to the efficient and long-lived phosphorescence observed.

Persistent Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Purely Organic Molecules and Multi-Component Systems

Summary: This review discusses organic molecular materials that exhibit long triplet lifetimes at room temperature, examining whether they originate from a molecular or multi-component system. In purely organic phosphors, heteroatoms are typically introduced into the backbone to enhance the singlet-triplet ISC rate constant. In multi-component systems, the implementation of strategies such as host-guest interactions, polymer matrix, copolymerization, and supramolecular assembly create a rigid matrix that restricts nonradiative pathways, resulting in ultralong RTP.
