Application of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) for rock mass quality evaluation

Muhammad Hasan et al.

Summary: Rock mass quality evaluation is a challenging task in geotechnical investigations due to natural heterogeneity and limited data. Traditional drilling tests are expensive and time-consuming, causing uncertainties in geological models. This study establishes empirical correlations between ERT and drilling data to obtain rock mass integrity coefficient (Kv), providing 2D/3D imaging of rock mass quality evaluation. The proposed approach is applicable in any hard rock setting and can be used in areas with sparse borehole data.

Assessment of collapse dolines occurrence using electrical resistivity tomography: Case study of Moul El Bergui area, Western Morocco

Othmane Boualla et al.

Summary: The Moul El Bergui area has long been recognized for its agricultural potential and permanent irrigation systems since the 1980s. However, recent collapses of dolines in this area have caused significant material damage and continue to pose a threat to the population, infrastructure, and agricultural lands. Studies have shown that the collapse dolines occur as a result of various associated processes, including dissolution of carbonated bedrock and presence of fractures and/or faults that facilitate the infiltration of water. Therefore, factors such as heavy rainfall, consolidated dunes barriers, and irrigation can be considered as the main triggers and aggravating factors for the occurrence of collapse dolines.

Comparing the Effects of GPS Error on Different Electrical Resistivity Tomography Arrays for Archeological Investigations

Lorenzo Ciani et al.

Summary: For archaeological purposes, optimal reconstruction of soil is essential to accurately identify the dimensions and depth of buried anthropogenic remains, allowing for easier excavation survey design and cost minimization. The widely used geophysical technique of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) measures ground resistivity at different depths to reconstruct underground stratigraphy, but misplacement of electrodes can lead to incorrect data analysis. This study analyzes the influence of GPS accuracy on subsoil resistivity distribution through a Monte Carlo simulation, discussing how GPS error impacts different ERT arrays and the deployment of remote poles for pole-dipole arrays.
