Review of Machine Learning Applications Using Retinal Fundus Images

Yeonwoo Jeong et al.

Summary: Automating screening and diagnosis in the medical field saves time, reduces chances of misdiagnosis, and saves on labor and costs. With the development of deep learning methods, machines are now capable of interpreting complex features in medical data, leading to rapid advancements in automation. This paper reviews recent state-of-the-art works in ophthalmology that utilize color fundus images for automated screening and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. The challenges in developing these systems are also discussed.

Predicting adverse outcomes due to diabetes complications with machine learning using administrative health data

Mathieu Ravaut et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a machine learning-based model for predicting adverse outcomes due to diabetes complications using administrative health data in Ontario, Canada. The model had strong discrimination with an average test AUC of 77.7 and demonstrated the potential of machine learning and administrative health data for informing health planning and healthcare resource allocation for diabetes management at the population level.
