Module-scale analysis of low-salt-rejection reverse osmosis: Design guidelines and system performance

Yuhao Du et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of low-salt-rejection reverse osmosis (LSRRO) technology was investigated through module-scale analysis. The impact of membrane properties and operating conditions on LSRRO system performance was studied, and a comparison was made between 2-stage and 3-stage LSRRO systems. The results showed that 3-stage LSRRO can achieve high concentration of brine with relatively low energy consumption when treating feed waters of low salinity.

Combined electrocoagulation-microfiltration-membrane distillation for treatment of hydraulic fracturing produced water

Mahmood Jebur et al.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water is treated using a combination of electrocoagulation microfiltration and membrane distillation process to remove pollutants and separate particulate matter, resulting in high quality treated water. Different membranes with varying surface morphology are utilized to desalinate the pretreated wastewater, indicating that the ideal membrane for resistance to wetting and high flux depends on the TDS and properties of the wastewater.

Correlations for Concentration Polarization and Pressure Drop in Spacer-Filled RO Membrane Modules Based on CFD Simulations

Boram Gu et al.

Summary: New dimensionless correlations for concentration polarization modulus and friction factor are presented in this study, obtained using simulation data from computational fluid dynamics and compared with existing correlations in the literature. The new correlations show good consistency in predicting concentration polarization, but larger discrepancies in pressure gradient among various friction factor correlations.

Comparison of Energy Consumption of Osmotically Assisted Reverse Osmosis and Low-Salt-Rejection Reverse Osmosis for Brine Management

Zhangxin Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the energy consumption of OARO and LSRRO for MLD/ZLD applications and found that LSRRO has lower energy consumption when treating moderately saline water, but has the potential to outperform OARO when treating high salinity water in terms of energy efficiency. Additionally, both OARO and LSRRO could potentially have 50% lower energy consumption compared to mechanical vapor compressor, commonly used in MLD/ZLD applications. The feasibility of OARO and LSRRO based on membrane module availability and capital cost was discussed, suggesting that LSRRO may be more feasible than OARO.
