Block copolymer coated carbon nanotube membrane anodes for enhanced and multipurpose hybrid capacitive deionization

Summary: In this study, a pH-responsive block copolymer (BCP) was combined with selective swelling to improve the adsorption capacity and stability of carbon nanotube membranes used in capacitive deionization processes. The BCP-coated electrodes showed enhanced attraction between electrode and anions, leading to improved performance in the hybrid CDI (HCDI) module. The combination of BCPs and selective swelling demonstrated significant enhancement in removal efficiencies towards NaCl and NaH2PO4, as well as improved chemical and mechanical stabilities of the anodes.

The hybrid additive at 1 wt% showed more effective performance than single additives, demonstrating synergistic effects both technically and economically. This is the first study to report the application of ultra-low content AC/CNTs hybrid in AC based CDI electrodes.

Synchronous removal of tetracycline and water hardness ions by capacitive deionization

Summary: A low-cost, efficient and eco-friendly capacitive deionization (CDI) technology was introduced to simultaneously remove tetracycline (TC) and water hardness ions. Hierarchical porous carbon material derived from kelp was used as electrodes, achieving high TC removal capacity and maintaining over 90% removal efficiency even after five CDI cycles. The study demonstrated the effective CDI technology in synchronous removal of tetracycline and water hardness ions for water purification.
