Cannabis Product Ingestions in Pediatric Patients: Ranges of Exposure, Effects, and Outcomes

Eric E. Kaczor et al.

Summary: Pediatric exposures to cannabis edibles can lead to serious adverse effects, with younger children at higher risk of respiratory depression and hospital admission. The need for respiratory support was associated with symptoms such as lethargy, bradypnea, hypercarbia, seizure, and hypertension. There was a significant increase in pediatric edible cannabis exposures after recreational cannabis dispensaries opened in Massachusetts.

Synthetic Cannabinoids and Cathinones Cardiotoxicity: Facts and Perspectives

Davide Radaelli et al.

Summary: New psychoactive substances (NPS) are a group of psychotropic substances designed to mimic traditional substances' effects, not regulated by UN Conventions. These substances pose challenges for public health and forensic toxicologists, causing a wide range of side effects involving various systems and mechanisms of action. Studies primarily focus on neurotoxic effects, with limited research on cardiotoxicity. Synthetic cannabinoids and cathinones play a role in cardiac events through different mechanisms, primarily mediated by CB1 receptor activation, leading to concerns about adrenergic over-stimulation and oxidative stress. This systematic review aims to summarize research on how synthetic cannabinoids and cathinones damage myocardial tissue.

Modulation of human T-type calcium channels by synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists in vitro

Chris Bladen et al.

Summary: The study found that SCRAs can potently block the Cav3.2 T-type calcium channel, with a more significant inhibition effect in the slow-inactivated state. The modulation of this channel may be a mechanism of SCRA toxicity, suggesting the potential for SCRAs as a new drug class for treating diseases related to T-type channel activity.

Summary: Using human-derived CNS cells, novel in vitro models were applied to study the cytotoxic effects of MAM-2201 on human primary neurons (hNLCs) and astrocytes cell line (D384), demonstrating the potential of these cellular models in clarifying the neurotoxicity mechanisms of synthetic cannabinoids.
