Molecular diagnosis of polymicrobial brain abscesses with 16S-rDNA-based next-generation sequencing

A. Stebner et al.

Summary: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) using 16S-rRNA was applied for metagenomic analysis of intracranial abscess and meningitis samples, revealing a polymicrobial nature of these infections and demonstrating the suitability of the MiSeq platform for metagenomic diagnostics. The most prevalent bacteria in brain abscesses were Streptococcus intermedius and Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Independent risk factors associated with higher mortality rates and recurrence of brain abscesses from head and neck sources

Fugui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify features and independent risk factors associated with recurrence and mortality in patients with brain abscesses of head and neck origin. Factors such as low monocyte count, hyponatremia, renal dysfunction, hyperglycemia, and status at discharge were found to be linked with higher mortality rates in these patients, highlighting the importance of prompt recognition and aggressive treatment of these abnormalities.

Endoscopic diving technique for surgery of brain abscess

Yota Suzuki et al.

Summary: This case report describes the first clinical experience of using the endoscopic diving technique (EDT) in brain abscess surgery, showing its potential benefit in both endoscopic endonasal approach and cylinder surgery. The patient, diagnosed with a brain abscess caused by Streptococcus intermedius, underwent successful endoscopic irrigation and drainage with EDT, leading to gradual improvement of symptoms postoperatively.

Is the term anti-anaerobic still relevant?

Paul-Louis Woerther et al.

Summary: The article discusses the use of antibiotics against anaerobic bacteria and reevaluates the concept of anti-anaerobic spectrum in light of developments in the microbiota field. By highlighting the diversity of anaerobic bacteria species and the lack of antibiotic susceptibility profiles for many anaerobic bacteria, the relevance of the anti-anaerobic spectrum is challenged from clinical and ecological perspectives.

Brain Abscess Apparent Diffusion Coefficient is Associated With Microbial Culture Yields

Cheng Hong Toh et al.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the relationship between microbial culture yields and ADC values of brain abscesses, finding that mean ADC was the only significant factor related to culture yields. The study concluded that ADC could be used to discriminate between culture-positive and culture-negative abscesses with high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

Partial oral antibiotic treatment for bacterial brain abscess: an open-label randomized non-inferiority trial (ORAL)

Jacob Bodilsen et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate whether oral treatment for bacterial brain abscess after 2 weeks of IV antibiotic therapy is non-inferior to standard IV antibiotics. The expected sample size is 450 patients with a primary composite endpoint at 6 months. The results could potentially impact future treatment recommendations and provide significant health and cost benefits.

Ultrasound guided brain abscess aspiration

Gwenllian Yhr Evans et al.

Summary: Brain abscess is a neurosurgical emergency that often requires drainage to relieve pressure and identify pathogens. Surgical adjuncts such as neuronavigation and intra-operative imaging can facilitate surgery, but intra-operative ultrasound can offer real-time visualization at a lower cost. It is recommended to routinely use intra-operative ultrasound in abscess drainage surgery to improve efficiency.

Thickening of the walls of deep brain abscesses is associated with macrophage infiltration

Zuocheng Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the wall of deep-brain abscesses is thicker than that of superficial abscesses, and there are differences in macrophage infiltration between deep and superficial abscess walls. Additionally, brain abscesses caused by Staphylococcus show more significant macrophage infiltration and thicker walls in the deep brain compared to superficial abscesses.

CryptoCEST: A promising tool for spatially resolved identification of fungal brain lesions and their differentiation from brain tumors with MRI

Liesbeth Vanherp et al.

Summary: The study aimed to use Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) MR imaging to detect and distinguish fungal brain lesions caused by Cryptococcus species, helping to differentiate cryptococcomas from gliomas, even lesions smaller than 1mm(3). By combining specific CEST signals with high signal-to-noise ratio signals, accurate localization and differentiation of infectious brain lesions were achieved.
