Modulation of the immune system by melatonin; implications for cancer therapy

Masoud Moslehi et al.

Summary: The immune system plays a crucial role in the response of cancer cells to anti-cancer agents, as well as the side effects on normal tissues. Modulating immune responses can enhance the effectiveness of anti-tumor therapy and reduce normal tissue toxicity. Melatonin has shown promise in modulating tumor response and alleviating normal tissue toxicity. This review focuses on the immunomodulatory effects of melatonin in both tumor and normal tissues.

Chronic Lung Injury After Trimodality Therapy for Locally Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Junichi Soh et al.

Summary: Trimodality therapy is a common treatment option for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) patients. Chronic lung injury (CLI) is a frequent complication after such treatment, often leading to cavity formation and chronic infections requiring surgical intervention. Further research on appropriate management for CLI post-trimodality therapy is needed.

Roxithromycin attenuates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis by targeting senescent cells

Xuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of roxithromycin in treating pulmonary fibrosis by targeting senescent cells. Results showed that roxithromycin could selectively kill senescent cells, inhibit senescent cell-induced lung fibroblast activation, attenuate lung injury, inflammation, and fibrosis, and achieve these effects by inhibiting the NOX4 pathway.

Therapeutic Applications of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Shengnan Yang et al.

Summary: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive lung disease with unknown causes, and currently the only medications that can slow down the progression of the disease and improve survival rate are pirfenidone and nintedanib. The use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) provides a new hope for treating interstitial lung disease, but optimal treatment protocols are still lacking.

Summary: The lungs, with the largest surface area in the body, are more susceptible to airborne pathogens and pollutants that mediate pathologies through ROS. Excessive ROS production leads to pulmonary diseases, where mitochondrial dysfunction plays a prominent role, and therapeutic strategies include reducing oxidative stress.

DNA damaging agents and DNA repair: From carcinogenesis to cancer therapy

Larissa Costa de Almeida et al.

Summary: Cancer genome instability is caused by various defects in DNA repair machinery, making cancer cells more vulnerable to DNA targeting agents. The interaction between DNA repair deficiency and increased effects of DNA targeting agents emphasizes the importance of double-strand break (DSB) repair. Despite limitations, DNA-targeting drugs play a crucial role in cancer therapy when combined with targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

Summary: Cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or targeted cancer therapy are at risk of developing side effects due to the heavy production of ROS, which can lead to cellular damage and toxic release, triggering inflammatory responses. Redox reactions may play a crucial role in heart diseases.

Modulation of the tumor microenvironment (TME) by melatonin

Resveratrol for targeting the tumor microenvironment and its interactions with cancer cells

Qi Mu et al.

Summary: Overcoming tumor resistance to therapy requires in-depth knowledge of intercellular communications within the tumor microenvironment. Various immune cells and non-immune cells in the TME interact with cancer cells, playing a key role in tumor growth or inhibition. Resveratrol has shown potential in modulating these interactions to enhance anti-tumor immunity and reduce cancer cell resistance.
