The PREVIEW intervention study: Results from a 3-year randomized 2 x 2 factorial multinational trial investigating the role of protein, glycaemic index and physical activity for prevention of type 2 diabetes

Anne Raben et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the impact of two long-term weight-maintenance diets on the incidence of type 2 diabetes after rapid weight loss. Results showed that the three-year incidence of T2D was lower than predicted and did not differ between the diets, physical activity levels, or their combination. The comprehensive protocol combining weight loss, healthy eating, and physical activity successfully reduced the risk of T2D.

BMI trajectory and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes among middle-aged women

Juhua Luo et al.

Summary: This study found that in middle-aged women, initial BMI, rapid weight increase, early age of obesity onset, and greater obese-years are positively associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, slowing down weight increases, delaying the onset of obesity, or reducing cumulative exposure to obesity may substantially lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Summary: This study reviewed the evidence from multiple meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials on the associations of intermittent fasting with obesity-related health outcomes. The findings showed beneficial effects of intermittent fasting on anthropometric and cardiometabolic outcomes, supported by moderate to high quality evidence.

Effects of differential measurement error in self-reported diet in longitudinal lifestyle intervention studies

David Aaby et al.

Summary: The presence of differential measurement error in lifestyle intervention studies using self-reported measures of diet can lead to biased estimates of treatment effects and reduced power to detect treatment effects. Researchers designing intervention studies should account for this by increasing sample size, incorporating internal validation studies, or identifying statistical methods to correct for differential measurement error.

Life-course trajectories of weight and their impact on the incidence of type 2 diabetes

Diego Yacaman-Mendez et al.

Summary: The study identified five distinctive life-course trajectories of weight, showing that stable overweight, lean increasing weight, overweight from early adulthood, and overweight from late adulthood trajectories were associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes. The trajectory of overweight from early adulthood had the highest impact on the incidence of type 2 diabetes among both women and men.
