Properties of Animal-Origin Ash-A Valuable Material for Circular Economy

Izabella Maj et al.

Summary: In this paper, cow dung and chicken litter, two types of animal-origin biomass, were characterized in terms of combustion-related problems and ash properties. The results showed that these parameters were strongly influenced by the farming style. Free-range raw materials had higher ash contents and lower chlorine levels compared to industrial farming ones. Silica was found to be the predominant component in the ash of free-range samples, while industrial farming samples contained more calcium. Furthermore, the slagging, fouling, ash deposition, and bed agglomeration tendencies of the samples were evaluated based on 11 slagging indices. The study also assessed whether the ashes could be used as component materials for fertilizers according to current EU law regulations. The phosphorus concentration in the investigated ashes was significantly higher in industrial chicken litter samples. The concentrations of Hg, Cu, As, Ni, Cd, and Pb in all samples were below the limits of the UE regulations, but concentrations of Cr in all samples and Zn in industrial chicken litter exceeded these standards.

Microbial community structures and antibiotic biodegradation characteristics during anaerobic digestion of chicken manure containing residual enrofloxacin

Tie Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of residual enrofloxacin (ENR) on the anaerobic digestion of chicken manure and the biodegradation rate of ENR. The results showed that the addition of ENR increased the total biogas production, but at high concentrations, it reduced the production rate and delayed the peak period. ENR had different effects on archaea and bacteria, promoting hydrolysis reactions but inhibiting acetoclastic methanogens. The half-life period of ENR in the anaerobic digestion system was 9.16-10.83 days, with a biodegradation rate exceeding 80%.

Synthesizing biochar-based fertilizer with sustained phosphorus and potassium release: Co-pyrolysis of nutrient-rich chicken manure and Ca-bentonite

Mahmudul Islam Piash et al.

Summary: Biochar-based fertilizers synthesized using a simple technique involving the co-pyrolysis of Ca-bentonite and chicken manure exhibit promising slow-release performance for phosphorous and potassium. The addition of Ca-bentonite significantly reduces the solubility of orthophosphates and slows down the release of potassium in soil. However, it has no significant impact on nitrogen release. The nutrient release from the biochar-based fertilizers also varies in different soil media.

Can N2O emissions offset the benefits from soil organic carbon storage?

Bertrand Guenet et al.

Summary: In order to meet the global warming targets set by the Paris Agreement, drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are required alongside large-scale deployment of other climate mitigation strategies. Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is an important lever, but it must be considered that this may lead to increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, offsetting some of the climate benefits.
