Bisphenol A release from short-term degraded resin-based dental materials

Siemon De Nys et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the release of BPA from resin-based dental materials and evaluate the impact of degradation under different conditions. Results showed trace amounts of BPA in composites and quantifiable BPA release in water. In alkaline media, release of BPA from some materials decreased significantly, while one adhesive showed increased release in acidic conditions.

Evaluation of monomer elution, microhardness, and roughness of experimental dental composite resins prepared from Bis-EFMA, a novel monomer system

Omer Hatipoglu et al.

Summary: This study compared the monomer elution, microhardness, and roughness of experimental resin-based composites (RBCs) prepared from a novel monomer system with a commercial RBC. Bis-EFMA showed lower monomer elution and higher microhardness, suggesting its potential as a substitute for Bis-GMA in commercial RBCs.

Bisphenol A Release from Dental Composites and Resin-Modified Glass Ionomers under Two Polymerization Conditions

Antonin Tichy et al.

Summary: This study measured the long-term release of Bisphenol A (BPA) from dental resin-based materials. The results showed that conventional composites released the highest amounts of BPA, while BPA-free composites released the least. Fast polymerization increased the initial release of BPA, but the overall effect of polymerization conditions was not significant.

Assessing the estrogenic activity of chemicals present in resin based dental composites and in leachates of commercially available composites using the ERa-CALUX bioassay

Imke Boonen et al.

Summary: The biocompatibility of resin-based dental composites, particularly in relation to their estrogenic activity, has not been fully characterized. Research has shown that certain monomers and additives used in these composites, as well as the leachates from commercially available composites, exhibit estrogenic activity. Further investigation is needed to ensure the safe use of these materials.

Long-term elution of bisphenol A from dental composites

Siemon De Nys et al.

Summary: The study successfully quantified the one-year release of BPA from four commercial materials using an optimized analytical method. Results showed that BPA continuously eluted from all tested composites over a year when ethanol was used as the extraction solvent, while in water, BPA release could be detected for up to a year but levels could not be accurately quantified after several weeks.

Summary: Bisphenol A (BPA) and its alternatives, such as bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF), are endocrine-disrupting chemicals with widespread presence in the environment and potential health risks for humans and animals. Studies have shown that exposure to BPs can lead to various health problems and chronic diseases as they disrupt signaling pathways and generate reactive oxygen species. Efforts are being made to evaluate their fates, health risks, and removal methods in different environmental media.

Effect of Polymerization Time on Residual Monomer Release in Dental Composite: In Vitro Study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the amount of residual monomer released from nanofiller composite resins for different polymerization times and storage periods. Results showed variations in monomer release among different composite materials, with Bis-GMA having the highest release, and a peak in monomer release observed on the 15th day followed by a decrease. Polymerization time did not significantly affect monomer release, but the type of monomers and filler concentration in the composites did.

Summary: This study found that finishing and polishing procedures significantly reduce the release of residual monomers from bulk-fill composite and compomer materials. The restorative materials are chemically unstable after polymerization, and concentrations of eluted monomers may reach critical toxicity levels even after one restoration placement. Finishing and polishing procedures are necessary to decrease residual monomers.
