Corrosion behaviour of 316 stainless steel in NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt vapour at 700°C

Qi Liu et al.

Summary: The experiment investigated the corrosion behavior of 316 stainless steel in NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt vapor at 700 degrees C under static conditions. Easy-to-peel oxide layers were formed on the surface, with their composition and structure changing as exposure continued. The initially formed oxide monolayer gradually transformed into oxide multilayers, with the outermost layer changing from Cr-Fe oxide to Mg-Cr oxide, due to varying diffusion rates of elements and different reaction rates of MgCl2 in the salt vapor.

Summary: The research demonstrates that the corrosion depth of SiC and the concentrations of elements Si and B in the salt increase with the corrosion time, which are well fitted with Fick's law of diffusion.

Effect of thermal aging on corrosion behavior of type 316H stainless steel in molten chloride salt

Xiaoli Li et al.

Summary: The study found that long-time thermal aging affects the corrosion behavior of type 316H stainless steel in molten chloride salt, resulting in reduced weight loss and thinner Cr depleted region in the thermally-aged specimens. The mechanisms behind the different corrosion behaviors were discussed based on experimental observations.

Impurity driven corrosion behavior of HAYNES® 230® alloy in molten chloride Salt

Brendan D'Souza et al.

Summary: The impurity-driven corrosion behavior of HAYNES (R) 230 (R) alloy in molten salt is influenced by temperature and impurity levels, with lower impurities leading to better corrosion resistance. Additionally, corrosion due to molten salt vapors is more severe at higher temperatures, driven by outward diffusion of chromium through the grain boundaries.
