Pitting Corrosion of Biomedical Titanium and Titanium Alloys: A Brief Review

Yu-Wei Cui et al.

Summary: Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical fields due to their excellent corrosion resistance, superior mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. Pitting corrosion is a critical consideration for the reliability of titanium and its alloys when used in the human body. This article focuses on the growth stages and main influencing factors of pitting corrosion, highlighting that the corrosive environment, applied potential, temperature and alloy compositions are the main factors affecting the pitting corrosion of titanium and its alloys. Furthermore, different types of titanium alloys have varying degrees of pitting corrosion resistance, with beta-type titanium alloys showing the best resistance among the three types of titanium alloys.

Corrosion behavior and characteristics of passive films of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti-6Al-4V in dynamic Hank's solution

Liang-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of L-PBF-produced titanium alloys in body fluid is investigated in this study. Compared to static Hank's solution, dynamic Hank's solution leads to lower charge transfer resistance and higher passivation current density for Ti-6Al-4V. Additionally, more deposition of apatite and hydroxyapatite is observed in dynamic Hank's solution.

Corrosion behavior and mechanism of selective laser melted Ti35Nb alloy produced using pre-alloyed and mixed powder in Hank's solution

P. Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the corrosion behavior and mechanism of SLM Ti35Nb separately processed with mixed powder and pre-alloyed powder in Hank's solution. Both samples showed similar corrosion behavior, but the pre-alloyed powder had more stable oxide films, while distinct oxide films formed on the TiNb and Nb regions in the mixed powder.

Differences in electrochemical corrosion behaviours between selective laser melted and wrought Ti6Al4V alloys in acid fluoride-containing artificial saliva

Lei Guan et al.

Summary: The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of selectively laser melted (SLMed) and wrought Ti6Al4V alloys in acid fluoride-containing artificial saliva were compared in this study. It was found that the SLMed Ti6Al4V alloy exhibited inferior corrosion resistance compared to the wrought Ti6Al4V alloy, with differences observed in active dissolution, active-passive transition, and passivation behavior. The differences in corrosion mechanism were attributed to the microstructural differences between the two manufacturing methods.

Corrosion behavior of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V in sulfamic acid cleaning solution

Wenbin Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the corrosion behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloys manufactured by different techniques in aircraft deicer. It is found that the corrosion resistance is strongest in the SPS Ti-6Al-4V alloy, followed by the SLM Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the EBM Ti-6Al-4V alloy is the most vulnerable. The beta phase composition is positively correlated with the corrosion resistance of the alloys.
