This study proposes a novel bamboo composite tube and investigates the failure modes and bearing capacities of the tube under different parameters. The results indicate that the bamboo composite tube has the potential to be used as column components, and a calculation method for predicting its bearing capacity is established.
Novel bamboo composite tubes were proposed to overcome the defects of original bamboo tubes, such as their irregular cross-section size, their limited tube diameter, and the major influence of the material location. Axial compression tests were carried out on 24 groups of bamboo composite tubes, with three identical hand-rolled specimens in each group. Considering different parameters, including two inner diameters (50 and 100 mm), three winding layers (10, 15 and 20), three length-to-diameter ratios (1, 2 and 3) and two fiber orientations (longitudinal and circumferential), the influences of these parameters on the failure modes and bearing capacities of bamboo composite tubes were studied. The failure of the bamboo composite tubes was progressive, with obvious signs of failure, and the bearing capacity was stable, with little dispersion. The test results indicated that bamboo composite tubes have the potential to be used as column components. The continuous strength design method was extended to the strength calculation of the bamboo composite tubes. Combined with the compressive constitutive model of the bamboo composite tubes under compression, a calculation method suitable for predicting the bearing capacity of the bamboo composite tubes was established. The analytical results were in good agreement with the experimental results.
