Improving the calculation accuracy of FEM for asphalt mixtures in simulation of SCB test considering the mesostructure characteristics

Yanjing Zhao et al.

Summary: The traditional three-dimensional finite element simulation of asphalt mixture fracture consumes too many computing resources and has low efficiency, limiting its application. In contrast, the two-dimensional finite element simulation is more efficient but is affected by aggregate content and particle distribution, which fails to accurately represent the real particle structure. By using an image selection process, the accuracy of the two-dimensional finite element simulation can be improved while reducing the number of models required and computational resources.

An experimental study of aggregate shape effect on dynamic compressive behaviours of cementitious mortar

Sheng Jiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of aggregate shape on mortar dynamic failure behaviors using a Split Hopkinson bar device. It was found that the shape of aggregates significantly affected the cracking mechanisms in mortar, with more regular aggregates leading to higher dynamic compressive strength and strain rate sensitivity.

Fatigue Cracking Analysis of Asphalt Concrete Based on Coupled XFEM-Continuum Damage Mechanics Method

Guang-Lai Jin et al.

Summary: A coupled XFEM-CDM model was developed to investigate fatigue cracking behavior of asphalt concrete, successfully simulating the continuous process of fatigue damage accumulation and crack propagation. Model parameters determination and analysis of fatigue crack growth in SCB beam were discussed, with numerical results quantitatively matching well with experimental records. Fracture investigation of asphalt mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement using an equivalent energy approach

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: Asphalt concrete exhibits different fracture behaviors at low and intermediate temperatures, with stress intensity factor (K-IC) and energy release rate (J-integral) commonly used to evaluate fracture performance. This study introduced an equivalent stress intensity factor (K*(IC)) to assess the fracture toughness of asphalt concrete at a wider temperature range. Test results indicate that the addition of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) enhances fracture performance at intermediate temperatures. Furthermore, the use of a rejuvenator was found to be effective in improving fracture resistance at both low and intermediate temperatures.

Cracking Analysis of Asphalt Mixture Using Semi-circle Bending Method

Xiaoying Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the influence of temperature levels, binder types and loading speeds on the parameters of asphalt mixture cracking was investigated through SCB tests, with stiffness, tensile strength and fracture energy used as inputs in XFEM models. The results showed the effects of temperature, binder type and loading speed on these parameters, and XFEM was used to analyze the effects of initial notch width and shape on SCB tests.
