Hydration kinetics of ternary slag-limestone cements: Impact of water to binder ratio and curing temperature

Ruben Snellings et al.

Summary: Ternary cements offer a potential solution for reducing CO2 emissions from cement production. The study found that water to binder ratio mainly affected slow reacting phases at later ages, while curing temperature had varying impacts on different cementitious minerals. Elevated temperature curing did not lead to cross-over effects in terms of slag hydration degree at later ages.

Summary: Utilizing a combined activator of Ca(OH)2 and Na2CO3, this study investigated the effect of combined activator content on the performance of alkali-activated ferronickel slag system. The workability decreases with the increase of Na2O equivalent, while compressive strength first increases and then decreases, with the optimal Na2O equivalent identified as 5%.

Effect of accelerators on Ca(OH)2 activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag at low curing temperature

Qi Zhai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the early effects of three accelerators on a Ca(OH)2 activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag binder at low curing temperatures. Results showed that accelerators can promote strength development in the early stage, but cannot effectively improve pore structure, which limits strength development. Furthermore, a good correlation was found between initial strength development and the limit equivalent ionic conductivity (LEIC).

A microstructural investigation of a Na2SO4 activated cement-slag blend

Jiayi Fu et al.

Summary: The addition of sodium sulfate can enhance the reactivity and early strength of cement:slag binders, leading to increased rates of early strength development and decreased rates of late strength development due to effects on capillary porosity refinement. The study also shows that the presence of Na2SO4 may result in a lower degree of hydration at later ages, potentially leading to higher capillary porosity. Additionally, an alteration in the pathway of microstructural development is suggested, with inhibition to hydration of the slag component due to earlier microstructural development.

Factors affecting the reactivity of slag at early and late ages

Yosra Briki et al.

Summary: The study found that the reactivity of slag is significantly higher in NaOH solution than in cement paste. When the NaOH solution is saturated with portlandite, the reaction rate of slag decreases and approaches that in cement paste, possibly due to the presence of calcium ions released by clinker phases.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of low-temperature curing on the mechanical properties, hydration process, hydration products, pore characteristics, and microstructure of alkali activated FA and GGBFS mortar. The results showed that low-temperature curing decreased the compressive strength, delayed the hydration process, and resulted in the formation of harmful pores in the alkali activated mortar.

Effect of supplementary cementitious materials on carbonation of cement pastes

Mickael Saillio et al.

Summary: The study found that anhydrous phases are less decalcified than hydrated phases after carbonation, with most of the calcium in slag-containing cement pastes remaining in the non-hydrated part of the slag. The C-A,S-H phase undergoes significant modification during carbonation, showing a coupling with hydrated aluminate phases. Ultimately, in all carbonated materials, these phases tend to form an aluminosilicate gel with less water content than the original hydrates.

Monitoring early hydration of calcium sulfoaluminate clinker

P. Padilla-Encinas et al.

Summary: The study monitored the initial hydration and setting process of calcium sulfoaluminate clinker mixed with water or 2 M NaOH using various techniques, showing that P-wave acceleration is highly effective in detecting rapid reactions. Setting in the water-hydrated KCSA pastes was mediated by the formation of ettringite, while flash setting was observed in the 2 M NaOH-hydrated clinker. Ye'elemite played a significant role in later reactions, inducing the precipitation of AFt and AH(3) and the formation of smaller proportions of other calcium aluminate hydrates.

Effect of Ca(OH)2 Addition on the Engineering Properties of Sodium Sulfate Activated Slag

Xiaodi Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) addition on sodium sulfate activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Results show that Ca(OH)(2) addition can substantially increase early age compressive strength and shorten setting times. Additionally, excessive Ca(OH)(2) incorporation may lead to a less well-packed microstructure, while the main reaction products in this case are chain-structured C-A-S-H gels and ettringite.
