Effect of Alkali-treatment on Structural, Thermal, Tensile Properties of Dichrostachys Cinerea Bark Fiber and Its Composites

P. G. Baskaran et al.

Summary: This investigation analyzed the effect of alkali-treatment on the chemical composition, structure, thermal stability, tensile strength, and surface topology of dichrostachys cinerea bark fibers (DCFs). The findings showed that optimally treated DCFs had improved properties compared to raw DCFs, including enhanced cellulose content, decreased hemicellulose and lignin contents, increased crystallinity index, tensile strength, thermal stability, and improved surface topography.

Utilization of polymer chemical admixtures for surface treatment and modification of cellulose fibres in cement-based composites: a review

Banjo A. Akinyemi et al.

Summary: Current construction activities have resulted in the reduction of non-renewable resources and high levels of toxic mineral wastes and greenhouse gas emissions. Exploring renewable materials like cellulose fibers for building materials is crucial, but challenges of durability and interfacial adhesion need to be addressed. Various surface treatment methods and polymer modifications have been studied for cellulose fiber reinforced cementitious applications to improve properties and performance.

Influence of acrylic latex and pre-treated hemp fibers on cement based mortar properties

S. Candamano et al.

Summary: This study investigates a strategy to improve interaction at the fiber-matrix interface and tailor matrix resistance to penetration in hemp fiber-reinforced cement-based mortars. The chemical modification of hemp fibers and matrix modification using an acrylic elastomeric polymer dispersion are effective in improving the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The results show that the chemical pre-treatment removes impurities from hemp fibers, providing a cleaner surface and higher thermal stability, resulting in enhanced mechanical performance and crack resistance in the composites.

Treatment methods for plant fibers for use as reinforcement in cement-based materials

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: The use of natural fibers in cement-based building materials is a growing field in the construction industry due to their green, sustainable, and low-cost renewable properties. However, challenges such as high-water absorption, limited tensile strength, and open surface morphology have hindered their widespread utilization. Successful research has been conducted to address these challenges and improve fiber-matrix adhesion and durability.

Influence of sisal fibers on the mechanical performance of ultra-high performance concretes

Guosheng Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that the length and volume fraction of sisal fibers have an impact on the flowability of UHPC mixtures, with a certain amount of longer fibers improving the flexural strength and toughness of UHPC. The pull-out load and pull-out energy also increase with the length of fibers.

Influence of short-term degradation on coir in natural fibre-cement composites

J. L. Stapper et al.

Summary: Natural fibers are seen as a potential alternative to traditional fiber materials in cement-based composites. The study found that the performance of coir fibers is not affected by alkalinity, and only hemicellulose readily degrades in highly alkaline environments. Therefore, alkaline hydrolysis is not the main factor in natural fiber degradation.

Summary: In recent years, research has been actively conducted on the development of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites. Despite the numerous advantages of natural fibers, limitations due to factors such as poor wettability and interfacial bonding persist. Chemical treatment, such as mercerization or alkali treatment, has been shown to improve the mechanical properties of these composites and enhance interfacial bonding.
