Numerical investigation of expandable graphite suppression on metal-based fire

Ivan Miguel De Cachinho Cordeiro et al.

Summary: In this study, expandable graphite (EG) is proposed as a potential suppressant against alkaline metal fire. The model developed to study EG's performance was validated by comparing with experimental results, showing relative effectiveness of EG in fire suppression. Parametric analysis on EG particle sizes within 400-1000 μm range revealed that 400 μm EG particles demonstrated the most effective suppression performance and a suppression time of 2 seconds, indicating smaller sizes of EG tend to be more effective in fire suppression.

ReaxFF simulations of the synergistic effect mechanisms during co-pyrolysis of coal and polyethylene/polystyrene

Dikun Hong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the co-pyrolysis behaviors of Zhundong coal with polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) using reactive molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that coal promotes primary decomposition of PE at low temperatures but has little effect on PE pyrolysis at high temperatures. Meanwhile, PE and PS significantly promote coal char decomposition at high temperatures, with polystyrene having a more pronounced effect than polyethylene.

Carbon fiber synthesis from pitch: Insights from ReaxFF based molecular dynamics simulations

Cuiying Jian et al.

Summary: Despite the potential cost advantages of pitch-based carbon fiber compared to polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fiber, large scale utilization is currently hindered by the complex manufacturing process. Through atomistic simulations, it was found that the molecular composition and arrangement of pitch precursors have significant impacts on the properties of carbonized CFs. By analyzing CF crystallinity and elemental composition, guidelines for selecting optimal precursors and processing conditions were proposed to improve industrial CF synthesis efficiency.

Atomistic understanding of interfacial processing mechanism of silicon in water environment: A ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation

Song Yuan et al.

Summary: Reactive force field simulations were used to study the interfacial wear between silicon and amorphous silica in a water environment, revealing different removal and damage mechanisms under high pressure, velocity, and humidity. The results showed that high humidity leads to substrate passivation, reducing damage, while high pressure and velocity result in new removal pathways and higher removal rates. The study also demonstrated how abrasive particles induced tribochemical reactions and formed more interfacial Si-O-Si bridge bonds under high velocity conditions.

Thermal oxidation of graphite as the first step for graphene preparation: effect of heating temperature and time

Sujith S. Nair et al.

Summary: Oxidation of graphite using thermal oxidation method was studied, revealing that short heating time at temperatures between 200°C and 1000°C caused oxidation of graphite, while longer heating time led to partial reduction. On the other hand, heating between 800°C and 1000°C resulted in reduction of graphite.
