Heat insulation and ablation resistance performance of continuous fiber reinforced composites with integrated gradient fabric

Weijie Li et al.

Summary: In this study, continuous fiber reinforced porous resin-based composites with integrated gradient fabric (CPIGF) were successfully prepared. The temperature increase during ablation was slow and the linear ablation rate was low. The simulation results showed that the CPIGF had good heat insulation capacity due to the anisotropy properties of the fabric architecture. Microstructure analysis revealed that the good ablation resistance came from the thermal expansion of the integrated gradient fabric and the densification of specific fabric zones.

Surface tension measurement of Ti-Zr and Ti-Hf alloys at high-temperature by the pendant drop method

Jialiang Long et al.

Summary: Reactive melt infiltration (RMI) is an important method for improving the ablation resistance of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites by introducing high-temperature alloy melts to form ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs). This study investigated the surface tension of Ti-Zr and Ti-Hf alloys, which are commonly used in RMI. The results showed that the surface tension increases with the content of Zr or Hf, and impurities such as carbon and oxygen have minimal influence on the surface tension.

Comprehensive performance of multifunctional lightweight composite reinforced with integrated preform for thermal protection system exposed to extreme environment

Weijie Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel multifunctional lightweight composite reinforced with integrated preform was prepared for the thermal protection system of hypersonic vehicles. The high-temperature behavior, including thermal physical properties decomposition performance and ablation resistance, was tested, and the micro-morphologies of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the novel composite exhibited high structural efficiency, excellent thermal insulation performance, and superior ablation resistance, making it a promising material for the development of thermal protection systems for hypersonic aircraft.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the interface properties of continuous carbon fiber/polyimide composites

Yishu Yan et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical calculations to show that the presence of grafted functional groups in carbon fiber/polyimide composites can greatly enhance the interfacial shear strength, which linearly increases with the number of grafted groups. It also revealed that the mechanism of interface enhancement is the synergistic effect of non-bond interactions and surface roughness.

Towards a reliable assessment of charging effects during surface analysis: Accurate spectral shapes of ZrO2 and Pd/ZrO2 via X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Pascal Bargiela et al.

Summary: This work proposes a spectral data processing method based on the mapping of photoemission peak binding energy on ZrO2 and Pd/ZrPO2 surfaces, providing insights into the response of material surfaces to charge compensation. Spectromicroscopy of these surfaces is used to monitor the efficacy of charge compensation, with iterative singular value decomposition introduced for efficient calculation of spatially resolved spectra. The developed concepts result in robust peak models for ZrO2 and Pd/ZrO2 surfaces that can be applied in XPS analysis of similar materials.

A novel fiber-fretting test for tribological characterization of the fiber/matrix interface

Joey Kabel et al.

Summary: Ceramic matrix composites have excellent high temperature properties and their strength and deformation behavior are closely related to the properties of the fiber/matrix interface. This research introduces a novel technique to evaluate the friction and wear characteristics of these interfaces, with a case study revealing changes in friction coefficient and wear behavior with cycle length. Raman spectroscopy and SEM fractography provide insights into the structural disorder at the tribo-surface.

Comparison of braking behaviors between iron- and copper-based powder metallurgy brake pads that used for C/C-SiC disc

Xu Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that iron-based and copper-based powder metallurgy brake pads, when paired with C/C-SiC brake discs, exhibited a coefficient of friction ranging between 0.35 and 0.6 under different braking conditions, with the C/C-SiC disc showing minimal wear. The wear mechanism of the Fe-based PM pads was mainly abrasion, while that of the Cu-based pair primarily relied on adhesion and fatigue peeling.
