Tessellated multistable structures integrated with new transition elements and antisymmetric laminates

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents novel multistable structures composed of different deformation elements and new transition elements, showing good agreement between experimental properties and simulation results. The study demonstrates that these new methods not only reduce the area of transition elements, but also have good applicability and improved deformability.

Morphing of bistable variable stiffness composites using distributed MFC actuators

P. M. Anilkumar et al.

Summary: The use of piezoelectrically controlled bistable composite laminates for morphing applications has been increasingly studied. This study explores an alternative approach of bonding distributed smaller MFCs over the entire surface of the laminate and investigates the resulting stable shapes and change in snap-through voltages.

Snap-through of bistable variable stiffness laminates using MFC actuators

P. M. Anilkumar et al.

Summary: Unsymmetric composite laminates exhibit multiple stable equilibrium shapes due to residual thermal stresses. MFC actuators are used to trigger snap-through, but high voltage input is required. Variable Stiffness laminates offer a larger design space and the ability to reduce actuator size.

Shape prediction of bistable plates based on Timoshenko and Ashwell theories

Summary: This study focuses on the geometric characterization of bistable composite plates and their interdependence of curvatures, particularly in terms of non-linear features and accurate prediction techniques. The novel forecast model presented maps the surface profiles of bistable laminates through analytical models and experimental data, providing insights into the relationship between material properties and bistability.

Transient deformation and curvature evolution during the snap-through of a bistable laminate under asymmetric point load

Vishrut Deshpande et al.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the snap-through behavior and complex deformation of bistable carbon fiber composites under asymmetric, localized point loading conditions. Three distinct snap-through behaviors were observed depending on the point load location, and the initiation and propagation of a curvature inversion zone played a significant role in determining these characteristics. The study also explored the feasibility of using an extended analytical model of classical lamination theory to qualitatively reproduce the observed snap-through behaviors.

Bistable characteristics of hybrid composite laminates embedded with bimetallic strips

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel bistable hybrid composite laminate embedded with bimetallic strips was designed, combining stable-state characteristics with temperature-sensing characteristics. A contactless method deforms the bimetallic strip through the temperature field to drive the bistable laminate and control curvature. The new laminates have different curvatures in different stable states, and can be easily driven by changing ambient temperature.
