Evaluation of locally available amorphous waste materials as a source for alternative alkali activators

Katja Konig et al.

Summary: The use of waste materials as alternative alkali activators can help reduce carbon footprint in the production of alkali-activated materials; Among various waste materials, cathode-ray tube glass shows the most promising performance as an alternative activator; The alternative activators exhibit significantly higher activation strength for slag compared to commercial water glass.

Characterization of phosphate processing sludge from Tunisian mining basin and its potential valorization in fired bricks making

M. Ettoumi et al.

Summary: The study found that phosphate sludge can be used as an alternative raw material for fired bricks and can improve the performance of the bricks to some extent. The best performance of fired bricks was achieved at 1100 degrees C, meeting the construction material standards. Additionally, the metal concentrations in the bricks met environmental requirements.

Turning sandstone clay into supplementary cementitious material: activation and pozzolanic reactivity evaluation

Yubin Cao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the transformation of waste sandstone clay into high quality SCM through thermal activation. Activated sandstone clays (ASCs) showed high pozzolanic reactivity and can be used as SCM with rich mineral structure and pozzolanic activity. The study confirmed that even short time calcination improved the pozzolanic reactivity of ASCs, making them suitable for use in cementitious materials.

Synthesis of alkali-activated uncalcined Pisha sandstone cement composites

Jingliang Dong et al.

Summary: This study utilized natural Pisha sandstone to produce a novel alkali-activated cement, investigating its rheological properties, compressive strength, hydration properties, etc. It was found that under certain conditions, AUPC could replace ordinary Portland cement, but high activator concentration or long curing time could increase porosity and lower compressive strength.

Enhanced strength and microstructure of dredged clay sediment-fly ash geopolymer by mechanochemical activation

Seyedsaeid Hosseini et al.

Summary: Mechanochemical treatment of dredged clay, fly ash, and sodium silicate for geopolymer mortar production enhances reactivity, compressive strength, and reduces matrix pore size despite increased water demand. The efficacy of the treatment largely depends on the quantity and reactivity of fly ash in the geopolymer system, with inert dredged clay serving as an effective filler agent in up to 50% replacement.
