A UV-filtering, environmentally stable, healable and recyclable ionic hydrogel towards multifunctional flexible strain sensor

Jianyu Yin et al.

Summary: Multifunctional hydrogel sensors are important for flexible wearable devices, but it is challenging to fabricate sensors with high strength, transparency, UV filterability, environmental stability, self-healing capability, and easy recyclability. This paper successfully prepared a multifunctional composite ionic hydrogel (PGETA) by incorporating tannic acid-coated cellulose nanocrystals (TA@CNC) into a hydrogel. The PGETA hydrogel showed high tensile strength, stretchability, transparency, UV-filtering property, low-temperature tolerance, and moisturizing performance, as well as good self-healing capability and recyclability. It can be used as a wearable device to monitor deformations and physiological signals in different body parts.

A hyperbranched P/N/B-containing oligomer as multifunctional flame retardant for epoxy resins

Siqi Huo et al.

Summary: This study presents an effective method to create transparent epoxy thermosets with outstanding mechanical, dielectric, and fire-retardant properties by incorporating a P/N/B-containing hyperbranched oligomer. The addition of the hyperbranched additive improves the glass-transition temperature, optical transmittance, mechanical strength, and toughness of the epoxy resin, while reducing the dielectric constant, loss, heat release, and smoke generation during combustion. These findings have significant implications for the development of high-performance flame-retardant epoxy resins.

Synergistic fracture toughness enhancement of epoxy-amine matrices via combination of network topology modification and silica nanoparticle reinforcement

J. Gao et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy for enhancing the fracture toughness of high T-g epoxy thermosets reinforced with nanosilica particles (NSP) by rearranging the cross-linked networks. The addition of NSP and the modification of the network topology resulted in a significant improvement in fracture toughness. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed increased voids and enhanced void growth with the addition of monoamine functionalized partially reacted substructures (mPRS). Impact tests demonstrated the role of these toughening mechanisms on high strain rate deformation and energy dissipation.

A Study of Concept to Prepare Totally Biosourced Wood Adhesives from Only Soy Protein and Tannin

Saman Ghahri et al.

Summary: This study examines the initial application of wood adhesives sourced entirely from soy protein isolate (SPI) and a commercial flavonoid tannin. The adhesive is non-toxic and composed solely of these two biomaterials. The researchers found that pre-reaction between SPI and tannin at a temperature of 40 degrees C resulted in the best plywood bonding results. However, higher temperature pre-reactions led to premature cross-linking and loss of further bonding activity. The adhesive was analyzed using various methods and showed promise for further reinforcement using soy resins developed by other research groups.
