Multi-generational impacts of exposure to antidepressant fluoxetine on behaviour, reproduction, and morphology of freshwater snail Physa acuta

Jason Henry et al.

Summary: Contamination by pharmaceutical pollutants poses a critical threat to aquatic ecosystems. A study found that long-term exposure to the antidepressant fluoxetine reduces behavioral plasticity and egg mass production in freshwater snails, highlighting the potential harmful effects on non-target organisms and population resilience.

Salinity-mediated changes in hematological parameters, stress, antioxidant responses, and acetylcholinesterase of juvenile olive flounders ( Paralichthys olivaceus )

Jun-Hwan Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to confirm the limit of salinity tolerance in juvenile olive flounders by observing changes in blood parameters, neurotransmitter, antioxidant, and stress responses. Exposure to salinities lower than 8 psu resulted in significant changes in hematological parameters, neurotransmitter levels, antioxidant responses, and stress indicators of Paralichthys olivaceus.

Generation-specific and interactive effects of pesticide and antidepressant exposure in a fish model call for multi-stressor and multigenerational testing

Eli S. J. Thore et al.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of full life-cycle exposure to the emerging pollutant fluoxetine in combination with chronic exposure to the pesticide 3,4-dichlomaniline on two successive generations of N. furzeri. Both life-history and behavior were affected by the exposure, with inhibitory effects on growth and fecundity being generation-dependent, and enhanced swimming acceleration and feeding in response to fluoxetine dependent on the presence of 3,4-DCA. The findings demonstrate the relevance of a multi-stressor approach across successive generations and show the possibility of conducting full life-cycle and multigenerational tests within a short timespan using the killifish N. furzeri.
