Comparison of Pyrolysis Properties of Extruded and Cast Poly (methyl methacrylate)

Gregory J. Fiola et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences between cast and extruded PMMA on a property-specific level, and whether the differences justify unique pyrolysis models for each. Experimental results show notable variation in milligram-scale tests (TGA, DSC and MCC), but only slight variation in gram-scale tests (Controlled Atmosphere Pyrolysis Apparatus II or CAPA II). Comprehensive pyrolysis models are developed for each PMMA type with the help of hill climbing optimization algorithms to automate inverse analysis.

Downward burning of PMMA cylinders: The effect of pressure and oxygen

Maria Thomsen et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects of ambient pressure and oxygen concentration on the burning behavior of PMMA, showing that surface regression rate and mass burning rate decrease with decreasing ambient pressure and increase with decreasing oxygen concentration during downward opposed flame spread. A simplified model based on mixed heat convection coefficient and B number is used to estimate the surface regression rate, with model predictions effectively capturing the impact of ambient pressure and oxygen concentration, providing guidance for fire safety testing and design in different ambient conditions.
