Probing the gas-phase oxidation of ammonia: Addressing uncertainties with theoretical calculations

Javier E. Chavarrio Canas et al.

Summary: The kinetics of important reactions in ammonia oxidation models were revisited and studied in depth to improve model performance, with a focus on high-level electronic structure calculations. The impact of spin contamination and multi-reference character in reactions, as well as the contribution of electronically excited species, were analyzed. The calculated rate constants were used in simulations to evaluate model sensitivity to specific reactions.

New reactions of diazene and related species for modelling combustion of amine fuels

Paul Marshall et al.

Summary: Potential energy surfaces for reactions involving N2H2 isomers of diazene have been explored using density functional theory and coupled-cluster theory. The focus is on the isomerization and consumption processes of HNNH, with results showing that the Z HNNH isomer becomes more reactive at elevated temperatures, enhancing the consumption rate of diazene.

On the Rate Constant for NH2+HO2 and Third-Body Collision Efficiencies for NH2+H(+M) and NH2+NH2(+M)

Peter Glarborg et al.

Summary: In low-temperature flash photolysis of NH3/O2/N2 mixtures, NH2 consumption rate and product distribution are controlled by specific reactions. Re-analysis of previous experiments, along with direct measurements and calculations, yielded rate constants for key reactions. Competing reaction pathways were identified, and uncertainties in the derived rate constants were discussed.

Theoretical studies on NH2 + NO2 reaction: Driven by reaction dynamics

Jinnan Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, chemical dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the NH2 + NO2 reaction on the singlet potential energy surface at 298 K. Seven methods were used to calculate the properties of stationary points, and the results were compared with higher level benchmarks and available theoretical/experimental values. Direct dynamics simulations revealed the reaction reactivity, product branching ratio, and microscopic reaction mechanisms at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The study showed a preference for the P2 product channel over P1 at 298 K, despite the latter being more exothermic, indicating that dynamical factors govern the competition between the two channels.

Enhancement of ammonia combustion with partial fuel cracking strategy: Laminar flame propagation and kinetic modeling investigation of NH3/H2/N2/air mixtures up to 10 atm

Bowen Mei et al.

Summary: This study investigates laminar flame propagation of partially cracked NH3/air mixtures and analyzes the effects of equivalence ratio, cracking ratio, and pressure on combustion performance. Results show that in the partial fuel cracking strategy, thermal effect plays a minor role while chemical effect is significant for enhanced laminar flame propagation.
