Quantum confinement and size resolved modeling of electronic and optical properties of small soot particles

Kevin Wan et al.

Summary: This study modeled the electronic and optical properties of flame-generated carbon nanoparticles, analyzing the ionization energies and optical band gaps of particles of different sizes. It found a dependence of the refractive index on particle size, with the imaginary component being particularly sensitive. The study highlights the importance of considering size effects in refractive index for laser diagnostics of soot in flames.

Effects of maturity and temperature on soot density and specific heat

Hope A. Michelsen

Summary: This paper analyzes measurements of density and specific heat for solid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), providing estimates of their dependence on C/H ratio and temperature for use in models of soot formation and chemical evolution. The results are also applicable to models of optical properties of soot particles at different temperatures. Comparisons show excellent agreement with measurements of mature soot particles and graphite.

Small aromatic hydrocarbons control the onset of soot nucleation

Kevin Gleason et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel technique for quantitatively measuring gases and particles in flame environments and reveals the molecular growth process in soot formation. The findings suggest that only one and two-ring aromatic compounds can contribute to soot nucleation.

An experimental and modeling study on sooting characteristics of laminar counter flow diffusion flames with partial premixing

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical results showed that partial premixing significantly increased soot formation in ethylene flames, while slightly decreasing it in propane flames. Partial premixing played different chemical roles in the soot formation process of ethylene and propane flames.

PAHs controlling soot nucleation in 0.101-0.811MPa ethylene counterflow diffusion flames

Kevin Gleason et al.

Summary: The study compared the concentration distribution, nucleation rate, and dimerization rate of PAHs and soot in diffusion flames at different pressure ranges. It was found that changes in pressure and temperature have a progressively larger impact on aromatics and soot of increasing molecular weight.

Evolution in size and structural order for incipient soot formed at flame temperatures greater than 2100 K

Shruthi Dasappa et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that soot formed in higher-temperature flames exhibits unique carbon structures and formation processes compared to typical soot. Experimental and modeling results suggest that higher temperature flames' PAH concentration profiles are more sensitive to combustion mechanism choice than specific flame conditions, and soot particle size and yield decrease with increasing flame temperature.
