Intestinal barrier integrity in anorexia nervosa (a pilot study)

Malin M. Kleppe et al.

Summary: The study found that serum ZFP levels were significantly lower in AN patients compared to healthy controls, and were associated with BMI, age, and INR, but not with gastrointestinal complaints or eating disorder symptoms. Further research with alternative assessment methods is needed to investigate intestinal barrier function in AN.

Gut microbiota alteration in a mouse model of Anorexia Nervosa

Jonathan Breton et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota dysbiosis in the Activity-Based Anorexia mouse model was comprehensively characterized, revealing correlations between bacterial level changes and physiological parameters. Most observed gut microbiota alterations were found to be due to food restriction rather than physical activity. Furthermore, certain bacterial groups were identified to correlate with body weight, food intake, and hypothalamic neuropeptide levels in mice.

Anorexia nervosa and gut microbiota: A systematic review and quantitative synthesis of pooled microbiological data

Laura Di Lodovico et al.

Summary: Research indicates that alterations in gut microbiota, characterized by a decrease in butyrate-producing species and an increase in mucine-degrading species, may play a role in Anorexia Nervosa. Standardized research methods are recommended to improve comparability among studies and better identify the alterations of gut microbiota in AN.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Finds Increased Blood Levels of All Forms of Ghrelin in Both Restricting and Binge-Eating/Purging Subtypes of Anorexia Nervosa

Maria Seidel et al.

Summary: Studies on ghrelin levels in anorexia nervosa patients found that all forms of ghrelin increase in the acute stage, with a significant decrease in total ghrelin observed pre-treatment to follow-up. However, total ghrelin levels remain marginally elevated at follow-up, while no treatment effect was observed for acyl ghrelin.

Gut microbiota depletion affects nutritional and behavioral responses to activity-based anorexia model in a sex-dependent manner

Pauline Tirelle et al.

Summary: The study found that antibiotic-induced depletion of gut microbiota triggers changes in nutritional and behavioral responses to the activity-based anorexia model in a sex-dependent manner, with significant gender differences.

Development and Validation of Test for Leaky Gut Small Intestinal and Colonic Permeability Using Sugars in Healthy Adults

Summary: This study aimed to obtain normative data on small intestinal and colonic permeability. Results showed that C-13-mannitol is the preferred probe for small intestinal permeability, while C-12-mannitol is not suitable for use.
