Patient characteristics associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in parturients admitted for labour and delivery in Massachusetts during the spring 2020 surge: A prospective cohort study

Summary: This study evaluated the epidemiological factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in women admitted for labor and delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic in Boston. Results showed that factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection included younger age, obesity, race/ethnicity, residence in heavily affected communities, household member with known infection, non-healthcare essential worker occupation, and certain types of insurance. Racial disparities in pregnancy persisted with respect to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Summary: Most pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 during delivery were asymptomatic, with only a small percentage developing mild or severe symptoms. Infected mothers had higher risks of post-partum hemorrhage, transfusions, and ICU admissions compared to uninfected ones, as well as a higher risk of intra-uterine fetal demise. No differences were observed in other maternal, obstetrical, or neonatal outcomes between the two groups.

Summary: This study in a large tertiary care center in Mexico City revealed that around 29% of pregnant women had COVID-19, with the majority being asymptomatic. The study found no association between COVID-19 infection and pregnancy baseline features or risk factors, but positive women had a higher proportion of preterm births. Infants born to positive mothers were more likely to be admitted to the NICU and had longer hospital stays.

Additionally, the risk of moderate-to-severe or critical illness increases with the number of underlying medical or pregnancy-related conditions a pregnant woman has.
