American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7: Lifestyle Recommendations, Polygenic Risk, and Lifetime Risk of Coronary Heart Disease

Natalie R. Hasbani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of polygenic risk and lifestyle on the lifetime risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The findings showed that adherence to the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 (LS7) guidelines was associated with a lower lifetime risk of CHD, especially in individuals with high genetic susceptibility. Adherence to LS7 guidelines contributed more to the lifetime risk of CHD in Black participants. Therefore, improved polygenic risk scores are needed to accurately evaluate genetic susceptibility for CHD in diverse populations.

Race, Racism, and Cardiovascular Health: Applying a Social Determinants of Health Framework to Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease

Zulqarnain Javed et al.

Summary: Health care in the United States has made many innovations and successes in the past decades. However, the color of a person's skin still plays a significant role in determining their prospects of wellness and the quality of care they receive. Disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) serve as a stark reminder of social injustices and racial inequities that persist in society. People of color experience social disadvantages that increase their risk of CVD and poor disease outcomes. This review applies a comprehensive social determinants of health framework to understand how structural racism affects the health burden and increases the risk of CVD for historically underserved racial and ethnic groups.

Life's Essential 8: Updating and Enhancing the American Heart Association's Construct of Cardiovascular Health: A Presidential Advisory From the American Heart Association

Donald M. Lloyd-Jones et al.

Summary: In 2010, the American Heart Association introduced a new concept of cardiovascular health, aiming to shift focus from disease treatment to health promotion and preservation. However, subsequent evidence revealed limitations in the original approach, leading the association to convene a writing group to recommend enhancements and updates. This article introduces an enhanced approach to assessing cardiovascular health, called Life's Essential 8, which evaluates an individual's cardiovascular health.

Association of Cardiovascular Health Through Young Adulthood With Genome-Wide DNA Methylation Patterns in Midlife: The CARDIA Study

Yinan Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that cardiovascular health from young adulthood is associated with midlife epigenetic programming. The findings demonstrate the role of epigenetic markers in response to cardiovascular health changes and highlight the potential of epigenomic markers for precision cardiovascular disease prevention and earlier detection of subclinical cardiovascular disease.

Associations of gestational cardiovascular health with pregnancy outcomes: the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome study

Amanda M. Perak et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association of gestational cardiovascular health with adverse maternal and newborn outcomes. The results showed that more favorable cardiovascular health during 24 to 32 weeks of gestation was associated with lower risks for several adverse pregnancy outcomes in a multinational cohort.

Achieving Optimal Population Cardiovascular Health Requires an Interdisciplinary Team and a Learning Healthcare System: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Randi E. Foraker et al.

Summary: Improving population cardiovascular health requires strengthening primary and primordial prevention efforts, and healthcare systems-based approaches are key to reversing the deceleration in cardiovascular disease mortality. A learning healthcare system can serve as a model for developing evidence-based interventions and strategies to enhance cardiovascular health metrics at the population level.

Psychological Health, Well-Being, and the Mind-Heart-Body Connection: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Glenn N. Levine et al.

Summary: Clinicians have traditionally focused more on treating disease rather than the whole person, but there is a growing recognition of the impact of psychological health on cardiovascular health and disease. Strong associations have been found between psychological health and cardiovascular disease, suggesting interventions to improve psychological health can benefit cardiovascular health. Screening measures can be used to assess psychological health status, and psychological health should be considered in the evaluation and management of patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease.

2021 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Alice H. Lichtenstein et al.

Summary: Poor diet quality is closely linked to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and this scientific statement underscores the importance of healthy dietary patterns. Evidence-based dietary guidance includes principles such as energy balance, consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables, and choosing healthy sources of protein. Challenges to adhering to heart-healthy dietary patterns include targeted marketing of unhealthy foods and structural racism.

Associations of Maternal Cardiovascular Health in Pregnancy With Offspring Cardiovascular Health in Early Adolescence

Amanda M. Perak et al.

Summary: Maternal cardiovascular health during pregnancy is significantly associated with offspring cardiovascular health during early adolescence, indicating a potential lifelong impact of maternal health status on offspring. This multinational cohort study reveals that poorer maternal cardiovascular health is correlated with higher risks of poorer cardiovascular health in offspring during early adolescence.

Exploring Treatment for Depression in Parkinson's Patients: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Elisabeth C. DeMarco et al.

Summary: Depression is a common comorbidity among patients with Parkinson's disease, and this study found that those with probable PD are more likely to receive any kind of treatment, particularly mental health services and antidepressant medication. Additionally, PD patients screening positive for depression are more likely to report limitations in physical functioning due to emotional problems. Further research is needed to explore differences in treatment patterns, the impact of emotions on physical functioning limitations, and appropriate interventions.
