In Situ Monitoring of Palladium-Catalyzed Chemical Reactions byNanogap-Enhanced Raman Scattering using Single Pd Cube Dimers

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: The central dilemma in label-free in situ surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for monitoring of heterogeneously catalyzed reactions is the need of plasmonically active nanostructures for signal enhancement. By assembling catalytically active transition-metal nanoparticles into dimers, their plasmonic activity is significantly enhanced, enabling in situ SERS monitoring of various important heterogeneously catalyzed reactions.

Tailoring the adsorption behavior of superoxide intermediates on nickel carbide enables high-rate Li-O2 batteries

Yun Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the adsorption behaviors of superoxide species can be effectively regulated via a core-induced interfacial charge interaction. Moderate adsorption strength can enable superior rate capability in a Li-O2 battery. Operando X-ray absorption near-edge structure and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy provide tools to monitor in situ the evolution of the superoxide intermediates and the electronic states of the catalyst's metal sites during the discharge and charge processes, and correlate these with the surface adsorption states. The concept of tuning adsorption behavior through interfacial charge engineering could open up new opportunities to further advance the development of the Li-O2 battery and beyond.

Spectroscopic Verification of Adsorbed Hydroxy Intermediates in the Bifunctional Mechanism of the Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Yao-Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) mechanisms in alkaline conditions on PtNi alloy and Pt surfaces using in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and DFT. The results showed that Ni doping promoted hydroxy adsorption on the platinum-alloy surface, enhancing the HOR activity. Designing bifunctional catalysts to tune OH adsorption could be an efficient method for improving HOR activity in anion-exchange-membrane fuel cells.

Probing the Role of Atomic Defects in Photocatalytic Systems through Photoinduced Enhanced Raman Scattering

Daniel Glass et al.

Summary: Research shows that in photocatalytic processes, the lifetime of in situ generated oxygen vacancies (VO) plays a more important role in catalysis than concentration, with longer-lived VO significantly enhancing photocatalytic activity. Enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is associated with optimal VO concentrations that encourage carrier transport while avoiding charge carrier trapping.

In Situ Raman Observation of Oxygen Activation and Reaction at Platinum-Ceria Interfaces during CO Oxidation

Di-Ye Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activation and reaction of active oxygen species during CO oxidation at platinum-ceria interfaces using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, revealing the evolution of different oxygen species and reaction pathways. Oxygen efficiently dissociates into chemisorbed O on Pt and lattice Ce-O species simultaneously at interfacial Ce3+ defect sites under CO oxidation, leading to a much higher activity at platinum-ceria interfaces compared to that at Pt alone.
